Yang Lan: So were you caught by surprise when Titanic won over 11 Oscars?
Murdoch: No I didn’t know whether it would be eight, or eleven or twelve, but it was very thrilling and it was just great to be there to share the moment of triumph for Jim Cameron, the director, because it was very much his film. We signed the checks, we paid for it, we had the faith in him. But it was his talent.
Yang Lan: Could you describe to us when the first idea of Titanic was brought to you and how did you react to it?
Murdoch: Well, Cameron is under contract to make his films or give all his first ideas to us and he pushed very hard to make this story. He was quite passionate. He wanted to do it. We were very nervous because there had been previous pictures about Titanic and pictures that are made out on the sea always go over budget, can be very expensive. But he just wouldn't let go of the idea. He drove in and drove it and drove it. And we finally said yes and then when we saw what we thought it would cost, we said well, we'll do it, we’ll one up, but it would be nice to have a partner. So we invited another studio to put up quite a lot of money, which they did. And they've done well too.
Yang Lan: Was that a sign of doubtness of the soundness of this film?
Murdoch: Making pictures is always very, very risky. And this was a big risk, so we were a little cautious. Now of course, we would have preferred to keep it all but we did the right thing.
Yang Lan: OK. So, do you think you have given up too much to Paramount in return of...?
Murdoch : No we get 60 percent of the profits. And that’ll be a lot of money.

楊瀾：《鐵達(dá)尼號(hào)》獲得了11項(xiàng)奧斯卡大獎(jiǎng)，你聽到這個(gè)消息的時(shí)候驚訝嗎？
梅鐸：沒有。我不清楚這部影片得了幾項(xiàng)大獎(jiǎng)，是8項(xiàng)還是11項(xiàng)，還是12項(xiàng)。不過它的確很令人驚嘆。在頒獎(jiǎng)的時(shí)候，能分享導(dǎo)演吉姆•卡麥倫的光榮也十分難得。因?yàn)檫@部片子怎么說還是他的心血。我們簽了合同，付了錢，我們相信他。不過這是他的天才的體現(xiàn)。
楊瀾：你能不能說一說卡麥倫跟你說要拍攝《鐵達(dá)尼號(hào)》的時(shí)候，你的反應(yīng)怎么樣？
梅鐸：卡麥倫跟我們簽了合同，要拍這個(gè)電影，或者把他所有的想法賣給我們。他努力想做到這一點(diǎn)。他這個(gè)人很有激情。他想拍這部電影。我們當(dāng)時(shí)很為難，因?yàn)樵缇陀腥伺倪^以鐵達(dá)尼號(hào)為題材的電影了，而且，電影要在海上拍，在海上拍的電影一般要超出預(yù)算的。 會(huì)很昂貴的。不過他就是不肯放棄這個(gè)主意。他努力了無數(shù)次，下了狠心，最后我們同意了。后來我們談到我們想到的可能的費(fèi)用，我們說，好啊，我們讓你拍，我們包了。不過要是有一個(gè)合作伙伴就好了。這樣，我們就請(qǐng)了另外一個(gè)制作公司，他們投了很大一筆錢。他們做得也相當(dāng)不錯(cuò)。
楊瀾：這是不是說明你們一開始對(duì)電影的前景不太看好？
梅鐸：拍電影一直是非常非常冒險(xiǎn)的一件事。而這一次，風(fēng)險(xiǎn)比每次都要大， 所以我們就多了一份小心?，F(xiàn)在看來，我們當(dāng)時(shí)應(yīng)該把它全包下來，不過，當(dāng)時(shí)我們那么做是明智的。
楊瀾：你覺不覺得你們分了那么大一份給派拉蒙，換來了……？
梅鐸：不，我們獲得了利潤的百分之六十，很大一筆錢。
