雅思考試:閱讀中的符號有那些用處?

 

    主句中The Navajo language will die out 的內(nèi)容已知曉，在文章首段的 Line 3: … the native language is dying … (此處的native 指 the native Navojo, 前文有述)，那么要判斷的就是從句了。從其中的內(nèi)容應(yīng)該讀出關(guān)鍵信息是 too few speakers. 這里包含了一點和數(shù)字相關(guān)的信息few, 換言之，文中有可能會涉及到數(shù)字。

 

　　到文中尋找，在第三段的Line 5 發(fā)現(xiàn)了 150，000 speakers. 回到句首讀原句：

 

Navajo is considered endangered despite having 150,000 speakers. 雖然沒有明示150，000 speakers 是多還是少，不過despite 已經(jīng)明確了語氣：多。因為整句是說：盡管有150，000人講納瓦霍語，它還是面臨危險地境地。這無疑是在說這個數(shù)字已經(jīng)不少了。

　　因此，原句中的從句我們可以判斷為錯誤，從而Q10 的答案是 NO。

 

　　舉例二：Q 5 / T 1 / Cambridge 5

 

　　… Johnson did not have a 5_________ available to him, but eventually produced definitions of inexcess of 40,000 words written down in 80 large notebooks。

 

　　由題目中出現(xiàn)的數(shù)字40，000 可以定位到原文中page 17 的第二段Line 4:

 

　　Johnson wrote the definitions of over 40,000 words, and illustrated their many meanings…

 

　　返回到句首：The work was immense: filling about eighty large notebooks (and without a library to hand)， 再由題目分析得知：所需答案為可數(shù)名詞，并且是Johnson 在編撰詞典的工作中不具備的(did not … available)，而文中括號里‘without a library to hand'正好契合了該信息點，還有a 這個信號詞進一步確定，答案就非它莫屬了：library。
