[00:19.12]It is the thing he cannot bear to lose, [00:21.30]it is the thing whose passing he watches [00:23.71]with infinite sorrow and regret, [00:25.79]it is the thing whose loss he must lament forever, [00:28.74]and it is the thing [00:30.38]whose loss he really welcomes with a sad and secret joy, [00:33.66]the thing he would never willingly relive again, [00:36.62]if it could be restored to him by any magic. [00:39.02]Why is this? [00:40.66]The reason is that the strange and bitter miracle of life [00:44.16]is nowhere else so evident as in our youth. [00:46.90]And what is the essence of that strange [00:49.19]and bitter miracle of life which we feel so poignantly, [00:52.69]so unutterably, with such a bitter pain and joy, [00:56.41]when we are young? It is this: that being rich, [01:00.02]we are so poor; [01:01.55]that being mighty, we can yet have nothing; [01:04.29]that seeing, breathing, smelling, [01:06.57]tasting all around us the wealth and glory of this earth, [01:09.96]feeling with an intolerable certitude [01:12.91]that the whole structure of the enchanted life — [01:15.32]the most fortunate, wealthy, good, [01:17.39]and happy life that any man has ever known — is ours — [01:21.44]is ours at once, immediately and forever, [01:24.29]the moment that we choose to take a step, [01:26.58]or stretch a hand — we yet know that we can really keep, [01:31.29]hold, take, and possess forever — nothing. [01:33.69]All passes; nothing lasts: [01:36.53]the moment that we put our hand upon it, [01:39.16]it melts away like smoke, is gone forever, [01:42.11]and the snake is eating at our heart again; [01:44.52]we see then what we are and what our lives must come to. [01:48.24]When youth is gone, [01:50.86]every man will look back upon that period of his life [01:53.27]with infinite sorrow and regret. [01:54.91]It is the bitter sorrow and regret of a man who knows [01:58.51]that once he had a great talent and wasted it, [02:01.25]of a man who knows that once he had a great treasure [02:04.10]and got nothing from it, of a man who knows [02:07.16]that he had strength enough for everything and never used it.
