老子《道德經(jīng)》英譯第十三章

　　【原文】

　　寵辱若驚，貴大患若身。

　　何謂寵辱若驚?寵為下，得之若驚，失之若驚，是謂寵辱若驚。

　　何謂貴大患若身?吾所以有大患者，為吾有身，及吾無(wú)身，吾有何患?

　　故貴以身為天下，若可寄天下;愛以身為天下，若可托天下。

　　【現(xiàn)代漢語(yǔ)】

　　得寵和受辱都會(huì)令人驚恐，所以，要像警惕大的憂患那樣重視自己的身心健康。

　　什么是寵辱若驚?事實(shí)上得寵是卑下的(會(huì)使人喪失獨(dú)立健全的人格)。得到寵愛或者失去寵愛都會(huì)讓人誠(chéng)惶誠(chéng)恐、戰(zhàn)戰(zhàn)兢兢，這就是寵辱若驚。

　　什么是像警惕大的憂患那樣重視自己的身心健康呢?我們之所以能警惕憂患、防患于未然，就是因?yàn)樯硇牡拇嬖?。假設(shè)等到失去身心的時(shí)候，還拿什么去防范憂患呢?

　　所以，要判斷一個(gè)人能否肩負(fù)天下人的信任和國(guó)家的重托，首先要看他能否珍視、愛護(hù)自己的身心健康而不受外物、貪欲的誘惑和損害。

　　【英譯】

　　Favoritism and hazing all will make people panic-stricken. So people should regard Physical and moral integrity as great misery.

　　What is the meaning of that ‘Favoritism and hazing all will make people panic-stricken’? In fact, favoritism is humble but is not honorable (It will make us loose wholesome and Independent personality). It will make people become gingerly and awe-stricken no matter what they get, favoritism or hazing.

　　And what is meant by saying that physical and moral integrity are to be similarly regarded as great misery? What makes us can prevent great calamity is our having the physical and moral integrity. What shall we depend on if the physical and moral integrity was lost, inexistent?

　　Therefore it’s the first qualification people judge if a man could shoulder the nation and people’s great trust. This most important qualification is that if this man cherishes his physical and moral integrity and refuses the damage and temptation of greed.
