Footprints in the Sand是由基督教詩(shī)歌Footprints改編而來(lái)的一首歌。最初是Cowell想出主意要基于這首詩(shī)來(lái)寫一首歌的，接著他又詢問作曲和制作人團(tuán)隊(duì) David Kreuger和Per Magnusson是否能寫些東西來(lái)完成這首歌曲。他們?cè)赗ichard Page馬布里的家里開了個(gè)關(guān)于歌曲創(chuàng)作的會(huì)議，并在第二天順利完成了這支單曲。在一次HitQuarters的采訪中，Magnusson說他們本來(lái)認(rèn)為這首歌給Westlife,唱比較合適，但是最后這首歌卻給了Lewis。當(dāng)Cowell向Lewis提起這首歌曲的構(gòu)思時(shí)，她表示這首歌“相當(dāng)有趣”。為了完成這首歌，Cowell還設(shè)法聯(lián)系了一個(gè)制作團(tuán)隊(duì)。Lewis談起這首歌時(shí)，形容它“很感人，歌詞很振奮人心”。這首歌的主題就是“在別人需要幫助時(shí)施以援手”。
