英語國際音標共有48個，分元音和輔音(下章節(jié)詳述)。元音有20個，分單元音和雙元音兩大類;單元音中，按發(fā)音部位可分為前元音、中元音和后元音;按發(fā)音和嘴型大小、時間長短可分為長元音和短元音。如圖：
