On Wednesday, January 13th, I performed on stage for the first time. As someone who takes part in so many activities, it's extremely difficult to find the time to be a part of any production. For me, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to try acting through the Senior Play Project.

Auditions (試鏡)came first. They weren't particularly difficult, more to see who may be a better fit tor certain roles. We were told our roles in the various plays, and started to work immediately.

I was unsure of how I was as an actor, and I had to learn a lot fast: actions, my place in the story,my reactions, and countless other small details... As I began to improve as an actor, I was able to understand my characters better.

My first character is a man named Roger who is a senior advisor to a presidential candidate in a play called “The Spot.” He's a short-tempered guy who says what he wants and takes what he wants to assist his candidate in today’s tough political races. He's on the set of The Spot, an advertisement for the candidate, to make sure everything runs smoothly and that any problems are dealt with quickly and efficiently.

While I had really interesting characters, and the plays were funny and such a great experience to act in,I really love the Senior Play Project for the people. I worked with 12 other seniors who not only loved what they were doing, but offered help and advice throughout my entire learning process.

Between the lights, sounds, costume and makeup, and plenty more, theatre is a team sport just like basketball or baseball. There are no small parts; there is no one who isn't needed. I've learned to appreciate live theatre, and the effort that every person in the show, both onstage and offstage, puts into it.

24. How did the author feel about being in the project?

A. Lucky. B. Tired. C. Nervous. D. Confident.

25. What do we know about the character Roger?

C. He gives advice to the candidate. D. He is running for president.

26. What does the author like most about the project?

A. The people. B. The plays.

C. The characters. D. The costume.

27. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. The Senior Play Project. B. Acting for the first time.

C. What Makes a Good Actor. D. A Lesson Learnt through Acting.

Environmental experts warn that our planet is drowning in plastic.

The world's cities produce 2 billion tons of trash every year. By the year 2050 that number is expected to rise to 3 billion tons. The World Bank estimates that the largest amount of trash today, about 44 percent, is plastic. But we often have to buy packaged goods. And often that packaging is made of plastic.

Now, that may be changing. A new environmentally-friendly shopping model was recently launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. This shopping model, called Loop, aims to replace throwaway containers with reusable ones.

Loop is the idea of Terra Cycle, an American-based recycling company. Its chief, Tom Szaky. told the Associated Press (AP) that "removing plastics from the ocean is not enough." He said the point is to get away from single-use packages. Szaky said that Loop is the future of shopping. But it comes from an idea of the past.

He compared it to the “milkman model" of the 1950s in the United States. Back then, someone brought milk to your doorstep in glass bottles and then left with empty bottles. These could be cleaned and used again. The result is zero-waste.

Jennifer Morgan from the environmental non-profit organization Greenpeace also joined in the discussion about Loop at Davos. She said that “Greenpeace welcomes the aim of the Loop Alliance to move away from throwaway culture and disposability.” But Morgan questioned whether companies worldwide are ready to change their business models.

Loop is set to launch later this year in three eastern U.S. states, and also in Paris,F(xiàn)rance and some of the surrounding area. Then Loop plans to expand to the U.S. West Coast, Toronto, Canada and Britain by the end of this year or 2020.

Depression and suicidal thoughts have doubled in young Americans, according to a new study from the American Psychological Association.

Likely triggers? Cell phones and social media.

"More US adolescents and young adults in the late 2010s, vs the mid-2000s, experienced serious psychological distress, major depression and more attempted suicide (自殺),says lead researcher Jean Twenge, professor of psychology at San Diego State University. These trends are weak or non-existent among adults 26 years and over, suggesting a generational shift in mood disorders instead of an overall increase across all ages."

Twenge believes this trend is partially due to the explosion of digital culture over the past decade, which may have twisted modes of social interaction enough to affect mood disorders.

The study analyzed data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which tracked drug and alcohol use and mental health issues in more than 200,000 youths aged 12 to 17 from 2005 to 2017 and almost 400,000 adults from 2008 to 2017.

Major depression in the last 12 months increased by 52 percent in kids from 2005 to 2017 and 63 percent in young adults aged 18 to 25 from 2009 to 2017. There was also a 71 percent jump in young adults experiencing serious psychological distress in the previous 30 days from 2008 to 2017.

So what's so different now? Twenge says research shows young people just aren’t getting as much shuteye as they did in previous generations.

Whereas older Americans might have established more stability in their lives, sleep disrupting social stressors are likely at their peak for teens and young adults in this digital era, she says. Older adults arc also less likely to let devices interfere (干預(yù))with sleep.

These results suggest a need for more research to understand how digital communication versus face-to-face social interaction influences mood disorders and to develop specialized interventions for younger age groups.

Her suggestion? Put your phone down at least an hour before bedtime.

32. How is Paragraph 6 developed?

A. By stating facts. B. By giving examples.

C. By providing statistics. D. By presenting theories.

33. What might Professor Twenge agree with?

A. Mood disorders show no difference across all ages.

B Teens are less likely to let devices interfere with sleep.

C. Digital cultural explosion might cause depression in teens.

D. The past decade has seen a sharp decrease in teens mental disorders,

34. What do the underlined words “social stressors” in Para 8 mean?

A. Interaction modes. B. Mental health issues.

C Drug and alcohol use. D. Cell phones mid social media.

35. From which is the text probably taken?

A. A biology textbook. B. A science magazine.

C A travel guidebook D. A medical case

21. C 22. C 23. D 24. A 25. C 26. A 27. B
