It’s better for children to children to choose jobs that are similar to their parents’ jobs than to choose jobs that are very different from their parents’ jobs.

The prosperity of this age is built on the back of laborious people, if not for their toil, our civilization would not stand a chance of survival, not to mention to flourish. Most of us will, inevitably, become part of that labor force, finding a job and plod on. Some would think it is better to follow the footsteps of their parents to have a similar job, while others, me included, see it as overly cautious and conservative.

Risk-taking is highly valued as it has never been before, suggesting that a new type of employees is being demanded in the job market. Unlike their parents’ generation, currently, employees are not only expected to achieve mastery at one narrow domain, but to be versatile and continue to be malleable. Taking a different job, actually, could indicate that the person may have a better understanding and insight into his or her own strengths, weaknesses and career prospect, which means this person is, potentially, more willing to learn and engage with innovative ideas and uncertainties. Many business moguls once chose to deviate from the career path already travelled by their parents, and their success speaks for their choices.

A job is supposed to be personal. Many people get stuck with a job they never liked, but they dared not to get out and start afresh, because they have grown accustomed to that familiarity and their quick mind has been blunted, eyes grown dull, passion flamed out. Suppose that you start on a career similar to your parents’, it is safe to assume that the “veteran” would claim superiority over you, dispensing suggestions, throwing advice and tips your way at will and shove them down your throat. However you slice it, it will be a cloud hanging over your head all the time and enslave you for the rest of your life.

Admittedly,it could be advantageous and relatively comfortable to travel a well-explored road, since everything has been properly established and tested, grave errors or blunders are not likely to erupt, nor are innovations. I can say with certainty, if you choose that beaten path, monotony and drudgery would prevail in your life.

With all that said, I believe, naturally, a conclusion can be arrived that choosing jobs similar to parents’ is not necessarily preferable, and under some circumstances, it actually proves a terrible choice.
