General Information 基本概況

Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee，the well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader. It was the first university in China founded by an overseas Chinese. At present it is the only key comprehensive universify directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education in the five special economic zones and is one of China's higher-level universities designated for the state key construction of the“Project 211”and the“Project 985”.

廈門大學(xué)是由著名愛國(guó)華僑領(lǐng)袖陳嘉庚先生于1921年創(chuàng)建的，是中國(guó)近代教育史上第一所華僑創(chuàng)辦的大學(xué)，也是我國(guó)唯一地處五個(gè)經(jīng)濟(jì)特區(qū)的國(guó)家“211工程”和“985工程”重點(diǎn)建設(shè)的高水平大學(xué)。

Over the past eighty-five years，as the result of painstaking efforts by several generations of faculty and graduates inspired by the school motto:Pursue Excellence，Strive for Perfection，Xiamen University has accumulated rich experience in offering its educational programs. The university presents its features as a university “in the Special Economic Zone on the coast near Taiwan and with close ties with overseas Chinese.”Following its fine tradition of“loving the motherland and the university"，it has enjoyed a fine reputation both at home and abroad. Since its founding，over 140 000 students have graduated from the university，and over 50 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS ) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE)have studied or worked at Xiamen University.

1985年來(lái)，在“自強(qiáng)不息，止于至善”的校訓(xùn)激勵(lì)下，經(jīng)過幾代人的堅(jiān)忍不拔的努力，學(xué)校積累了豐富的辦學(xué)經(jīng)驗(yàn)，以“位居臺(tái)灣海峽經(jīng)濟(jì)特區(qū)，與華僑聯(lián)系緊密”為鮮明特色，堅(jiān)持“愛國(guó)愛校”的光榮傳統(tǒng)，成為一所在國(guó)際上有廣泛影響的綜合性大學(xué)。建校迄今，已先后為國(guó)家培養(yǎng)了14萬(wàn)多名本科生和研究生，在廈大學(xué)習(xí)、工作過的兩院院士達(dá)50多人。

With its 18 schools containing 45 departments，Xiamen University offers 70 undergraduate programs，14 first-category Ph. D. degree programs，17 second-category master degree programs，131 doctorate specialties and 217 master specialties. The university has 13 state key disciplines，12 post-doctoral research stations，5 national educational centers for talents of the basie scientific research. There are 19 disciplines listed in the nation“Project 211”，and 11 innovation platforms and bases listed into the second stage of the nation“Project 985”.

學(xué)校設(shè)有研究生院和18個(gè)學(xué)院(含45個(gè)系)，擁有70個(gè)本科生專業(yè)，14個(gè)博士學(xué)位授權(quán)一級(jí)學(xué)科，17個(gè)碩士學(xué)位授權(quán)一級(jí)學(xué)科，131個(gè)專業(yè)可招收培養(yǎng)博士研究生，217個(gè)專業(yè)可招收培養(yǎng)碩士研究生;擁有13個(gè)國(guó)家級(jí)重點(diǎn)學(xué)科，12個(gè)博士后流動(dòng)站，5個(gè)國(guó)家基礎(chǔ)科學(xué)人才培養(yǎng)基地，19個(gè)學(xué)科項(xiàng)目列人國(guó)家“211工程”建設(shè)，11個(gè)創(chuàng)新平臺(tái)和基地被列為國(guó)家“985工程”二期建設(shè)。

Xiamen University has over 4 900 staffs members，including 2 213 full-time faculty and professional researchers，1 308 of whom are full and associate professors,18 are academicians of CAS and CAE. Moreover, 7 faculty members of Xiamen University are seated on the State Council's Academic Degree Appraisal Committee.Among the full-time teachers and researchers，there are 354 doctoral supervisors,8 have been listed in the national“millions of Telenis Programs" 44 have been included in the Ministry of Education's training program for the“Leading Figure for the New Century";What is more，there are 18 winners of the Nation Foundation of Outstanding Young Scientists，9 specially invited professors and 4 lecture professor of“Cheungkong Scholars Program"

學(xué)校教職員工4 900余人，專任教師及專業(yè)研究人員2 213人中教授、副教授1 308人，兩院院士18人(含雙聘院士8人)，國(guó)務(wù)院學(xué)科評(píng)議組成員7人，博士生導(dǎo)師354人，列人國(guó)家“百千萬(wàn)人才工程”人選8人，列入教育部“新(跨)世紀(jì)優(yōu)秀人才一培養(yǎng)計(jì)劃”44人，“國(guó)家杰出青年科學(xué)基金”獲得者18人，“長(zhǎng)江學(xué)者”特聘教授9人、講座教授4人。

The university now has a total enrollment of over 33 000 full-time students on campus，including 18 989 undergraduates，10 591 master students，1 810 doctoral students，and over 1 200 overseas students and students from Hongkong，Macao and Taiwan regions.

At present, the university has 3 campuses which cover a total area of about 524. 5 hectare with 1.3 million square meters of floor space，situated at the foot of the green mountains，facing the blue sea and encircling Xiamen bay. The university library holds 4 090 000 volumes of books. The scope and level of its high-speed information network on campus is rated at the top of all universities in China.

學(xué)校三個(gè)校區(qū)共占地524. 5公頃，校舍建筑面積130多萬(wàn)平方一米，校園環(huán)繞廈門灣，依山傍海。圖書館藏書409萬(wàn)冊(cè)。校園高速信息網(wǎng)絡(luò)建設(shè)的規(guī)模、水平居全國(guó)高校一前列，并成為CERNET2的主接點(diǎn)之一。

Xiamen University is now making great strides towards its goal of“building a high-level university well-known both at home and abroad".

校主生平:陳嘉庚先生(1874一1961)

An overseas Chinese legend，Mr Tan Kah Kee's legacies have inspired many in Southeast Asia，by Comrade Mao Zedong as the“Flag of the Overseas Chinese and Glory of the Nation.”From humble immigrant origins，he rose to a prominence，which few can match. Best remembered as an eminent entrepreneur, social reformer, political activist, philanthropist，community leader, and educationist,he died at the age of 87 in Beijing on August 12，1961 and was accorded a national funeral by the Chinese Government for his contribution to the society.

陳嘉庚先生是偉大的愛國(guó)主義者、杰出的華僑領(lǐng)袖、著名實(shí)業(yè)家、教育家和社會(huì)活動(dòng)家，被毛澤東譽(yù)為“華僑旗幟民族光輝”。陳嘉庚于1874年10月21日出生在福建省同安縣集美社(即現(xiàn)廈門市集美區(qū))。17歲往新加坡從父經(jīng)商，后獨(dú)立經(jīng)營(yíng)菠蘿罐頭廠、米店和橡膠園等。1916年后，以橡膠和膠制品業(yè)為主，鼎盛時(shí)期其銷售網(wǎng)遍及全球，謂新馬樹膠王國(guó)的四大開拓者之一，成為馳名海內(nèi)外的大實(shí)業(yè)家。陳嘉庚于1961年8月12日在北京病逝，終年87歲，國(guó)家給予以國(guó)葬的哀榮，靈樞運(yùn)回集美，安葬于“鰲園”中。
