A: This building is beautiful, what is it?
 
這個(gè)房子真漂亮，是哪兒的房子？
 
B: It is the Oxford and Cambridge Club. See, these are flags of the two universities.
 
這是牛津劍橋俱樂(lè)部?？?，這是這兩所大學(xué)的旗幟。
 
A: I thought the two most famous universities in Briton don't get along well, but they even build up a Club together. Where is it located? Is it far from here?
 
我還以為這兩所英國(guó)最著名的大學(xué)關(guān)系不好呢，誰(shuí)知道它們還共同成立了一所俱樂(lè)部。在什么位置啊，距離這里遠(yuǎn)嗎？
 
B: Yes, a little bit far from here. It is at 71 Pall Mali，London. The clubhouse was designed for the membership by architect Sir Robert Smirke and completed towards the end of 1837.
 
嗯，有一點(diǎn)遠(yuǎn)，在倫敦市蓓爾美爾街71號(hào)。俱樂(lè)部的房子由建筑師羅伯特斯默克爵士設(shè)計(jì)，直到1837年年底才竣工。
 
A: I guess it was founded especially for members of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge?

B: Not really. Graduates from the two universities, students in other universities, graduates of any university, whether in Britain or overseas, are eligible for membership.

A: Does it charge any fee?

B: As of 2009，the membership subscription costs 900 pounds per year, with a 480 pounds rate for younger members. However, the club does not charge an entrance fee.
 
就拿2009年來(lái)說(shuō)吧，每位會(huì)員需要交納900英鎊的年費(fèi)，年輕一些的成員只要交480磅就可以了。但是，這個(gè)俱樂(lè)部是不收門票的。
 
A: If I'm not mistaken, there was an old club of this kind in Briton named United University Club.
 
如果我沒(méi)搞錯(cuò)的話，之前英國(guó)就有一個(gè)類似的俱樂(lè)部，叫做聯(lián)含大學(xué)俱樂(lè)部。
 
B: Let me tell you. Eight years after the foundation of the original United University Club in 1821，the waiting list had become inconveniently long; so it was decided to form a second club.
 
讓我來(lái)告訴你吧。1821年，在聯(lián)合大學(xué)俱樂(lè)部成立8周年之后，申請(qǐng)加入的人出奇的多，所以人們決定再成立一個(gè)類似的俱樂(lè)部。
 
A: So I guess that is the Oxford and Cambridge Club now?

B: Yes, But it was only in 2001 that it reverted to the Oxford and Cambridge Club.
 
是啊。直到2001年，它才改名叫做牛津劍橋俱樂(lè)部的。
 
A: Have you entered the Club building?
 
你進(jìn)這棟樓了嗎？
 
B: Yes. We even dined there! Actually when I sit in the grand coffee house, I felt like a toff, yet I still want to share my experience with you.
 
進(jìn)了啊，我們還在里面吃了一頓飯呢！實(shí)際上，當(dāng)我坐在那個(gè)裝潢華麗的咖啡廳時(shí)，感覺(jué)自己像個(gè)執(zhí)繪子弟，不過(guò)我還是愿意和你分享一下我的經(jīng)歷。
 
A: Go ahead please.

B: As the taxi drove down this road on Pall Mall on a dark December evening, I could see into the tall grand windows of the buildings.
 
那是12月的一個(gè)晚上，當(dāng)計(jì)程車開(kāi)到蓓爾美爾街，緩緩地停下來(lái)時(shí)，我都能透過(guò)高大的窗戶看到里面。
 
A: What did you see then?
 
你看見(jiàn)了什么？
 
B: There were 8 feet tall oil paintings of important men in Renaissance-style wigs in tails，parties of men in black tie and tails gathered around holding champagne flutes...
 
里面掛著幾幅長(zhǎng)約8英尺的油畫，有重要人物穿著文藝復(fù)興時(shí)期流行的燕尾服，戴著假發(fā)的肖像，也有聚會(huì)上系著黑色領(lǐng)結(jié)，身著燕尾服的男士，端著高腳香檳酒桿，來(lái)往應(yīng)酬，談笑風(fēng)生。
 
A:It is just like scene in Jane Austen's novels! How romantic! How was when you entered the hall?
 
就像簡(jiǎn)奧斯汀在小說(shuō)描繪的場(chǎng)景那樣！太浪漫了！那個(gè)大廳里面怎么樣？
 
B: Inside，having undressed our multiple coats and layers in the cloakroom, we then made our way to the Coffee Room. It was really grand.
 
一進(jìn)去，我們就在衣帽間脫去了厚重的外套，然后走到了咖啡廳。這咖啡廳真的非常漂亮。
 
A: What do they serve there? Is the food nice?
 
那里有什么吃的？味道如何？
 
B: Looking at the menu, you can find things are as traditionally British as you could get! The food was just pleasant, and plentiful. I finished nearly everything on ray plates. Furthermore, I should say that the service was impeccable.
 
你能在菜單上找到所有傳統(tǒng)的英國(guó)食物。味道很好，分量也很足。我?guī)缀醢驯P子里的東西吃了個(gè)精光。還有，那里的服務(wù)真是無(wú)可挑剔。
 
A: Really? I should go and have a look.
