A: OK, so you didn't have to do the test but you had to do letters or recommendation?

B: I did have to do three letters of recommendation and ...

A: Can I ask? Who did you ask? Professors?
 
你請(qǐng)誰寫的推薦信？教授嗎？
 
B: I did ask a few professors, an employer, and a long time family friend.
 
我拜托了教授，還有一名老板，還有一個(gè)家里的老朋友。
 
A: So you had a quite diverse mix?
 
你拜托了不同行業(yè)的人？
 
B: Yes.

A: One professor, one friend, family friend, and one employer.

B: Yes.

A: Now, were you worried about what they were going to say?

B: Well, when you ask for a reference you definitely want to ask from somebody you trust to write a good one for you. I've know people who have just randomly asked people, and not gotten the results that they had wanted. But even still, you kind of wonder like, what good do they have to say about me. What are they going to pick and choose because sometimes you want them to mention certain things, and it's best to actually ask them to.
 
你在請(qǐng)別人給你寫推薦信時(shí)，一定要找你相信會(huì)為你寫好話的人。我知道有些人在找寫推薦的人時(shí)很隨意，而最終他們并沒有得到他們想要的結(jié)果。不過，你還要想他們會(huì)寫你的哪些優(yōu)點(diǎn)。他們會(huì)選擇哪方面來夸你，因?yàn)橛袝r(shí)你有希望他們提及的方面，所以你最好告訴他們要寫哪方面的情況。
 
A: So you kind of feed them what to say?

B: Yes. A little bit.

A: So you took the test. You got the letters of recommendation. Is there any other part that you have to do to get in to grad school? Like show your transcripts? Summit transcripts?

B: Yes, you have to pay your undergrad, wherever you got your degree for your undergrad, you have to pay them all this money for them to send an official transcript to your new school that you want to go to.
 
對(duì)，你要付錢，無論你是在哪里獲得的本科學(xué)位，你都要支付他們一筆錢讓他們把你的成績單寄到你想去的新學(xué)校去。
 
A: Now, do they actually send you the transcript as well, or do they just send it straight to the school?

B: No, they send it straight to the school because the schools require an official transcript, so they don't trust you to send it in cause they figure you might mess with your grades.
 
他們不寄給我，直接寄到學(xué)校去，因?yàn)閷W(xué)校要求上交正式成績單，由你自己寄過去他們不會(huì)相信，因?yàn)樗麄冋J(rèn)為你可能會(huì)修改成績。
 
A: You might fidget or something.

B: Yeah.

A: So is that it then? The transcripts?

B: Transcripts, letters of recommendation, essays, letter of intent.

A: Letter of intent. Is there a difference between the essay and the letter of intent?
 
意向書。論文和意向書有什么區(qū)別？
 
B: An essay can sometimes just be a writing sample, whereas a letter of intent ... they want to know like your life goals, and your purpose of being on this earth. I don't like writing those personally, but ...
 
論文有時(shí)只是寫作范例，而他們希望通過意向書了解你的人生目標(biāo)，你希望達(dá)到的目標(biāo)。我個(gè)人不太喜歡寫這些，不過……
 
A: Why not?
 
為什么不喜歡？
 
B: Cause it just changes, and I think it's just contrived really. I don't see ... I can sum it up in a couple of sentences, but they want, you know, a three page paper on your life goals and I just don't like to have to write something.

A: Right, right, especially most people are quite young, so like they really know right?

B: Yeah, yeah.
