Inside Out is coming out of its 8th frame which added $10.8M offshore and $2.7M domestically. The worldwide total for the Pete Docter follow-up to Up is $635.5M as international closes in on domestic’s $335.4M. While it’s playing out in North America, IO is in 53 territories overseas, repping 74% of the international footprint. Among the best reviewed films of the year, it still has Italy and Germany to open on September 16 and October 1, respectively, while a China date has been mooted on October 8, but is yet to be confirmed.
In overall markets, the UK raced to become the best ex-U.S. play in its 3rd frame with a current $35.3M. Mexico is the 2nd best market abroad with $30.8M, followed by Korea and its $30.2M. IO is the No. 3 all-time biggest animated release in Korea and the No. 8 film of the year. In Australia, it is the No. 3 Pixar release of all-time; and in Russia it’s the No. 2 biggest Disney/Pixar animated release ever.
As for Ant-Man, it had a $17M global weekend — $9.2M from international. It now has a $147.44M domestic cume and $178.9M overseas. The Peyton Reed-helmed origins story is currently in 50 territories representing approximately 63% of the international marketplace. Still to come are Italy (August 12), Korea (September 3) and Japan (September 19). China is also on deck, but a date has not been made official despite local reports that it will bow on September 18.
The incredible shrinking superhero played by Paul Rudd will next be seen in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. The original Captain America, The First Avenger, topped out worldwide at about $371M, by way of comparison. Thor, which Disney has also used to comp A-M, grossed about $450M globally.
Beyond their brand power, both Ant-Man and Inside Out had extra momentum going into their worldwide runs. Inside Out had world premiered to an emotional high during the Cannes Film Festival with positive reviews and buzz spreading the word about Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. Disney had previously screened it at CinemaCon in Las Vegas and nearly a year before that had debuted footage at Barcelona’s CineEurope whetting appetites for European exhibitors. As of Sunday, IO had made 47% of its money overseas. Ant-Man had a sneak preview during that Barcelona event this year and was very well-received. It’s now holding well in Europe which is led (as is international box office overall for the film) by the UK with $22.4M. Mexico is next with $14.1M. Brazil ($12.1M), France ($11.3M) and Russia ($11M) follow. The international portion of Ant-Man is 54.8% of the total.
