權(quán)力的游戲精讀：drop a hint 放口風(fēng)

　　“If Gared said it was the cold?” Will began.

　　“既然蓋瑞都說是天氣的關(guān)系了……”威爾正要開口。

　　“Have you drawn any watches this past week, Will?”

　　“威爾，上周你有沒有站崗?”

　　“Yes, my lord.” There never was a week when he did not draw a dozen bloody watches. What was the man driving at?

　　“有啊，大人。”他哪星期沒抽到站崗的簽，這家伙究竟想說什么?

　　never在這里提到了be動詞之前，更加地強調(diào)，沒有例外。

　　drive at指一方?jīng)]有明說或者沒有說，而另一方懂得他的意思。即暗示。

　　e.g.: It was clear that John didn’t understand what Tom was driving at.

　　要是搞不懂別人老在暗示I can’t guess what you’re driving at.你對我有啥意思沒有?

　　暗示還有其他的一些表達，我們來對比一下:

　　Should I drop a hint to Matt? 這里drop a hint 表示透露一點，放口風(fēng)。動詞詞組，表隱含的是名詞，hint。

　　Mr. Thomas has indicated that he may resign. 這里的indicate意指不直白表達，拐外抹角地說。

　　What did she imply in her words? 這里imply是暗含，暗語。

　　后兩個是動詞表隱含。drive at 是固定動詞搭配。

　　“And how did you find the Wall?”

　　“長城的情形如何?”

　　“Weeping,” Will said, frowning. He saw it clear enough, now that the lordling had pointed it out. “They couldn’t have froze. Not if the Wall was weeping. It wasn’t cold enough.”

　　“在‘哭泣’啊，”威爾皺著眉頭說。這下他明白了。“所以他們不是凍死的，假如城墻會滴水，表示天氣還不夠冷。

　 weep，滲出液體。流出眼淚。
　 frown，眉頭緊皺。

　　此處weeping & frowning 雖然兩個詞都是v-ing 形式，但前者是動名詞而后者則是動詞的現(xiàn)在分詞。動名詞顧名思義是名詞，只是由動作演化過來的。而動詞分詞則是動詞的變化形式，或者帶有形容詞性質(zhì)表示人或事物的狀態(tài)。
