    從今天起我們要講由account這個(gè)詞發(fā)展而來的習(xí)慣用語。Account有好多不同的意思，而且既可以作名詞也可以當(dāng)動(dòng)詞。我們要學(xué)的第一個(gè)習(xí)慣用語是: bring somebody to account。 Account作名詞的時(shí)候可以解釋說明，bring sb. to account意思就是"要求某人說明"，或者"唯某人是問"，帶有要某人負(fù)責(zé)，或者怪罪批評某人的意思。

    有時(shí)候我們可以用call這個(gè)詞來代替bring somebody to account中的bring，成為call somebody to account，意義不變。我們來聽個(gè)例子，說的是美國情報(bào)機(jī)構(gòu)內(nèi)一件間諜丑聞。

    例句-1：Why can't they bring the responsible officers to account for the spy case? Something must be terribly wrong if they let one of their own people spy on them for eight years!

    他說：他們?yōu)槭裁床蛔肪磕桥?fù)責(zé)官員在那起間諜案中的罪責(zé)呢?他們?nèi)螒{一名內(nèi)奸刺探他們的秘密情報(bào)達(dá)八年之久居然渾然不覺。這之間一定有很大失誤!

    這里bring the responsible officers to account意思就是追究負(fù)責(zé)官員的罪責(zé)。我們再聽一個(gè)例子。它說的是海外發(fā)生的一起惡性事故奪取了許多無辜生命。

    例句-2：The opposition parties asked that the new mayor be called to account for the falling of a bridge. They say he paid no attention to a report warning that the bridge might not be safe.

    他說：反對黨認(rèn)為新市長要為那起橋梁倒塌事故擔(dān)當(dāng)罪責(zé)。他們說他無視一份說橋梁可能不安全的報(bào)告。

    這里the new mayor be called to account意思是新市長得擔(dān)當(dāng)罪責(zé)。

    我們接著學(xué)第二個(gè)習(xí)慣用語: square an account with someone。Square在這里是動(dòng)詞。意思是結(jié)清。Square an account with someone意思顯然是和某人算清帳目。換句話說是把該償付的錢付清。這個(gè)習(xí)慣用語常用作比喻意義。我們來聽個(gè)例子。他說的是和有線電視公司了結(jié)一宗糾紛的事。

    例句-3：I'm trying to square my account with the cable TV company. I believe they billed a wrong monthly charge. Instead of $16.75, they want me to pay $33.75 a month for six months.

    他說：我正設(shè)法解決和有線電視公司的糾紛。我肯定他們收錯(cuò)了月費(fèi)，有六個(gè)月他們要我每月付三十三美元七毛五，而不是十六美元七毛五。

    所以square my account with the cable TV company意思是解決和有線電視公司的糾紛。

    我們再聽個(gè)例子。人們說美國的特殊現(xiàn)象之一是業(yè)務(wù)交易效率高。消費(fèi)者可能對此體會(huì)更深。例如跟信用卡公司算清帳目十分簡單便利。

    例句-4：It's unbelievable how easy it is to square an account with a credit card company in America once you present a receipt. It certainly wouldn't be like that back home!

    他說：在美國你只要拿出收據(jù)，你和信用卡公司結(jié)一筆賬方便得令人難以置信。在我們國家里可絕不那樣簡單。

    這里square an account with a credit card company意思就是和信用卡公司結(jié)清一筆賬。這很可能是發(fā)生在用信用卡購物，隨后又退還的情況中。
