Today, people live in an age of knowledge explosion, more and more people realize the significance of acquiring knowledge. Therefore, public libraries have turned increasingly prevalent. Some people believe that the libraries should not provide multimedia resources such as DVDs and videos. Personally, I am convinced that the multimedia resources are necessary parts of a library.
Admittedly, if the public libraries only provide books for readers, the volume and the quality of the management will be improved. For example, the resources occupied by multimedia can be used to store more books. Sometimes when the popular books have too many borrowers, the library can spend the saved money to purchase more books so that they are available to different learners. Also, without offering DVDs or videos, more staff can be assigned to keep and renew the record of the borrowers and thus improving the efficiency of managing the books.
However, multimedia resources allow the learners to have access to different information through diverse ways and meet the demands of some visual learners. There are some people who prefer to learn through DVDs or videos because they think that is more direct and convenient, especially for those who have difficulties in reading. Multimedia could open the door to the world of knowledge for them. Without multimedia resources, only a certain group of people has the chance to study history, culture, language and cooking skills though books.
From my perspective, the public libraries exist as a kind of traditional place for the learners to wander in the world of knowledge. Therefore, the main resources they provide should be books because according to some surveys, books still have profound influences in our life. On the other hand, living in the modern society with the rapid development of multimedia, the public libraries should also keep abreast with the trend by offering DVDs or videos and other kinds of multimedia resources.
