As is vividly depicted in the picture, two women living door to door are asking the surname of each other as if they are complete strangers. As a matter of fact, one has lived here for 5 years while the other for 6 years. 1 The message conveyed in this picture is self-evident: modern people attach less importance to the relations with their neighbors. 1
Two reasons can explain this phenomenon. In the first place 2 , modern Chinese are more mobile. Instead of settling down in the same place for life, city dwellers especially the young are accustomed to changing their residency and houses. As a result, a harmonious neighborhood has weakened in their life. In the second place 2 , modern people attach more importance to privacy. They do not hope to interfere with others’ business. Meanwhile, they do not want their own personal life intervened.
From my perspective, neighbors are among the most intimate groups of people we deal with and the relations with neighbours should be highly valued, for a harmonious neighborhood contributes vastly to cultivating a social climate of honesty and trustworthiness. 3 We have every reason to believe that we can build a better world through developing a harmonious neighborhood. 4
