Dog and Cat

It is reported that the following addition to the Book of Genesis1) of the Bible was discovered in the Dead Sea Scrolls2)．If authentic3)，it would shed light on the question，“Where did pets come from？”

And Adam said，“Lord，when I was in the garden，you walked with me every day．Now I do not see you anymore．I am lonesome4) here and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me．”And God said，“No problem．I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you，so that you will know I love you，even when you can not see me．Regardless of how selfish and childish and unlovable5) you may be，this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do，in spite of yourself．”And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam．And it was a good animal．And God was pleased．And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and he wagged his tail．And Adam said，“But Lord，I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and all the good names are taken and I cannot think of a name for this new animal．”

And God said，“No problem．Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you，his name will be a reflection of my own name，and you will call him DOG．”And Dog lived with Adam and was a companion to him and Eve and loved them．And A dam was comforted．And God was pleased．And Dog was content and wagged his tail．After a while，it came to pass that Adam's guardian angel came to the Lord and said，“Lord，Adam has become filled with pride．He struts and preens like a peacock and believes he is worthy of adoration6)．Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved，but no one has taught him humility7)．”And the Lord said，“No problem．I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever and who will see him as he is．The companion will remind him of his limitations，so he will know he is not worthy of adoration．”And God created CAT to be a companion f or Adam．And CAT would not obey Adam．And when Adam gazed into Cat's eyes，he was reminded that he was not their supreme being．And Adam learned humility．And God was pleased．And Adam was greatly improved．And CAT did not care one way or the other．

上帝說，“沒問題。因?yàn)槲覄?chuàng)造這個(gè)動(dòng)物是來體現(xiàn)我對你的愛，那他的名字也將體現(xiàn)我的名字；你就把我的名字（God）倒過來，叫他狗（dog）吧。”這只狗從此與亞當(dāng)生活在一起，成了他和夏娃的伙伴，對他們情有獨(dú)鐘。亞當(dāng)感到很舒心。上帝也很高興，狗心滿意足，搖著尾巴。過了一陣子，亞當(dāng)?shù)淖o(hù)衛(wèi)天使來拜見主并匯報(bào)說，“我的主，亞當(dāng)已變得非常傲慢。他像孔雀一樣趾高氣揚(yáng)，認(rèn)為自己應(yīng)該受到愛戴。狗確實(shí)讓他知道他是受寵愛的，可沒有人教會他什么是謙卑。”主說，“沒問題。我要?jiǎng)?chuàng)造一個(gè)永遠(yuǎn)與他為伴并知道他本來面目的伙伴。這個(gè)伙伴將提醒他知道自己的不足，并認(rèn)識到自己并不值得受愛戴。”于是上帝又給亞當(dāng)創(chuàng)造了一個(gè)伙伴--貓。貓并不遵從亞當(dāng)?shù)闹家?。每?dāng)亞當(dāng)注視貓的眼睛時(shí)，他便想起來自己并不是最高主宰。這樣亞當(dāng)學(xué)會了謙卑。上帝感到滿意。亞當(dāng)有了很大的改觀。而貓則對什么也不在乎。
