雪萊(Percy B. Shelley, 1792-1822),英國浪漫派重要詩人。早年受到啟蒙思想的熏陶,一生痛恨封建壓迫,追求民主。他的詩歌氣概宏偉,畫面波瀾壯闊,一些作品富于政治思想,生動而深刻地反映了動蕩不安的社會現(xiàn)實。同時,他將對社會的批判和對理想政治的追求溶于抒情性的自然圖景之中,獲得了很高的藝術(shù)性,如十四行詩《峨席曼迭斯》。雪萊的抒情詩優(yōu)美、狂放,具有奇幻的意象,并富有深刻的哲理,極具寓意性和預(yù)言性,如傳世的不朽名篇《寄西風(fēng)之歌》、《致云雀》等。
我遇到一位來自古國的旅人,
I met a traveller from an antique land,
他說:兩根沒身軀的石刻巨腿
Who said—"Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
站在瀚海里。沙土中,巨腿附近,
Stand in the desart. ... Near them, on the sand,
半陷著一具破損的臉型,那皺眉,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
卷唇,和那睥睨一切的冷笑,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
顯出刻手們熟諳這類情緒,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
把它們刻在石頭上,傳留到今朝,
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
它們的摹刻者、培育者卻早已逝去:
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
在那底座上還出現(xiàn)了這些字跡:
And on the pedestal , these words appear:

My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings,

Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
巨型遺物外,只有空曠’寂;
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
廢址的四周,一望無際,莽蒼蒼,
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away."
