scum 池塘等的浮垢，［引喻］人渣、廢物、沒用的東西

 scum of the earth 最下流的人渣，最沒用的東西

1. got sent 相當于were sent的被動式，但got的語意比were為強，也證明get有l(wèi)inking verb的功能。

A. “The most common references for scum were to people in the drug trade，Communists and people who burn flags…” the report1 said. “Scum was used almost exclusively to describe people：vivisectors2， ninjas3， Sandinista4 friends，people who get the death penalty， looters， Trudeau’s comic strip5， violent criminals，Jews（in reference to anti-Jewish sentiment during the Gulf War），skinheads6 and pornographers7.”

據(jù)該報告指稱：被稱為人渣的主要是些販毒分子、燒毀國旗的人……人渣幾乎全是用來形容人，如：活體解剖者、忍者、支持尼加拉瓜游擊隊者、被判死刑者、掠奪者、杜樂道的漫畫、殘暴的犯人、猶太人（指在海灣戰(zhàn)爭期間的反猶太人情節(jié)）、白人至上主義者及經(jīng)營黃色買賣者。

注：

1. report 指Vulgarity Index（粗話索引）統(tǒng)計自1985年以來眾議院議員所用的罵人語和粗話。

2. vivisectors 指解剖活的動物者，人道主義者不齒其殘忍成性。

3. ninja 忍者（武士）的羅馬拼音。

4. Sandinistas 指里根總統(tǒng)任內(nèi)在尼加拉瓜境內(nèi)的自由游擊隊。

5. Trudeau’s comic strip 杜氏的連載漫畫經(jīng)常諷刺美政府及其政策，頗引起反感。

6. skinhead 白人至上主義者，排斥有色人種。

7. pornographers 語出希臘文，是販賣色情書畫及影集者。

1. look like shit與look like hell相同，表示“臟兮兮”。在look后的 like shit是形容詞短語，作主語補足語。用run over twice（被車壓過兩次）來加強語氣，run是過去分詞，當補語。

2. …they’re what’s 就是“…they are what is”的簡寫，they指的是新聞界。

3. standing between us and victory 站在我們與勝利中間，喻“擋路”、“妨礙我們勝利”。

2. scumbag 人渣

A. We’re2 supposed to be in current-day, small-town Mississippi3， where a young white lawyer agrees to defend a black factory worker after he guns down a couple of scumbags4 who raped and savagely beat his 10-year-old daughter.

故事發(fā)生在現(xiàn)今密西西比州的小鎮(zhèn)上，一黑人廠工槍殺兩個痛擊又玷污他十歲女兒的人渣后，一年輕的白人律師同意擔(dān)任他的辯護人。

1. 本文摘錄自該報A Time To Kill影評。

2. we 指觀眾。

3. Mississippi 美國南部密西西比州，此地曾發(fā)生多次黑白種族沖突。

4. scumbags 此處指的是兩個白人壞蛋（人渣）。

由此想起布爾頓因形容克林頓為極可惡的人而挨罵……拜托： Scumbag只是未經(jīng)世故者的意思。

注：

1. it 指紐約一個政客說他競選對手是個putzhead（putz乃猶太土語，作“生殖器”解），引起軒然大波，記者釋putzhead為jerk（乳臭未干者），認為scumbag也應(yīng)該釋為jerk。

1. one more slip up slip及slip up皆是小過失（mistake，error的同義字），此處是名詞：slip up亦當動詞，如Don’t slip up!（不準出差錯?。?。 One more與another同義，是“再一個……”之意。

3. …h(huán)ung out to dry（俚） 借“洗衣服掛在外頭晾干”，喻“受大家抨擊”之意。

1. Fee，F(xiàn)i，F(xiàn)o,Fum 是英文童話故事“杰克與豆莖”（Jack and the Beanstalk）里巨人喊出之聲音，目的在引起大家注意。

2. I see a tie… 酒保笑某雅痞，連上酒吧這樣輕松的場合居然也打領(lǐng)帶。

3. yuppie 雅痞（young urban professional的縮寫，字尾加“ie”有另眼相看或蔑視之意）。
