  My older sister is majoring in applied linguistics. (√)

  applicable是“適用的”,如:These rules are not necessarily applicable to foreigners.(這些規(guī)定未必適用于老外。)應(yīng)用的學(xué)科一律用applied,如:applied physics/mathematics / psychology 即“應(yīng)用物理學(xué)/數(shù)學(xué)/心理學(xué)”。

  2. My younger brother is now applying to a scholarship. (x)

  My younger brother is now applying for a scholarship.(√)

  apply to+機關(guān)/學(xué)校/公司,是指“向某機關(guān)/學(xué)校/公司申請(某物)或應(yīng)聘(某職位)”,如:I applied to three universities but was not accepted by any of them.(我向三所大學(xué)申請入學(xué)但都未被錄取。) apply for+事/物,是“應(yīng)聘(某職位)或申請(某物)”。另外,apply to+人/物,也可表“適用于某人或某物”,如:What applies to me does not apply to you.(適用于我的未必適用于你。)

  appreciate作“感激”或“欣賞”解時,均為及物動詞,后須接賓語,如:His boss does not really appreciate him.(他的老板并不真正欣賞他。)appreciate唯一不及物的用法是作“升值”解時,如:The RMB has appreciated for two consecutive weeks.(人民幣己經(jīng)連續(xù)升值了兩個星期。)
