“秋老虎”用英語(yǔ)怎么說(shuō)?

　　有的年份，雖然已經(jīng)進(jìn)入秋天，但是有幾天的天氣仍然很熱，這就是所謂的“秋老虎”了，那么，你知道“秋老虎”用英文怎么翻譯嗎?

　　“秋老虎”、“小陽(yáng)春”，都是中文里特殊的表達(dá)方式，那么如何用英文來(lái)表達(dá)“深秋季節(jié)的一段暖和天氣”呢?其實(shí)英文中有個(gè)與之相對(duì)應(yīng)的短語(yǔ)， "Indian summer"。

　　"Indian summer"指秋天的一段暖和、干燥的天氣，往往出現(xiàn)在9月下旬、10月和11月，有時(shí)候也會(huì)出現(xiàn)在8月或12月，愛(ài)倫·坡曾把它稱作 "strange interregnum occurring in autumn" 。 "Indian summer"中的"Indian"絕對(duì)不是指印度，而是指美洲的土著民族印第安人，因?yàn)檫@樣的天氣出現(xiàn)在美國(guó)東海岸中部各州，北到新英格蘭，西至大平原。這種天氣往往伴隨著災(zāi)難性的大霧。

　　"Indian summer"首次出現(xiàn)在1778年一位法國(guó)籍美國(guó)人的書(shū)中，他在描寫(xiě)殖民地的農(nóng)場(chǎng)中寫(xiě)道：

　　"Then a severe frost succeeds which prepares [the earth] to receive the voluminous coat of snow which is soon follow; though it is often preceded by a short interval of smoke and mildness, called the Indian summer."

　　那么他為什么會(huì)在文章中提到 "smoke"一詞呢?有一種說(shuō)法認(rèn)為印第安人在冬天來(lái)臨之前會(huì)用火燒的方法把躲藏起來(lái)的獵物驅(qū)逐出洞，或者是用火將耕地上的雜草燒盡以便第二年春耕，所以才有了"smoke"一詞。愛(ài)倫·坡在他的A Tale of Ragged Mountains里，也提到了"smoke"一詞("the thick and peculiar mist, or smoke, which distinguishes the Indian summer")，增加了這一說(shuō)法的可信度。

　　菲利普·多德里奇在他的Note on the Indian War in West Virginia(1842)中，對(duì)"smoke"一詞提供了另一種說(shuō)法。他寫(xiě)道，“煙霧籠罩的日子開(kāi)始了，它將要持續(xù)一段時(shí)間。這樣的天氣被稱為Indian summer，因?yàn)檫@段小陽(yáng)春的天氣為印第安人去騷擾移民地區(qū)的人們提供了機(jī)會(huì)。”("The smokey time commenced and lasted for a considerable number of days. This was the Indian summer, because it afforded the Indians another opportunity of visiting the settlements with their destructive warfare.")因?yàn)橛〉诎踩嗽谔鞗鲆院缶筒辉傧蛞泼竦貐^(qū)發(fā)起突襲，除了有這樣一段暖和的天氣。那么"smoke"就是印第安人焚燒村莊和房屋的結(jié)果。

　　在英國(guó)，人們也開(kāi)始用"Indian summer"來(lái)代替 "St. Luke's little summer", "St. Martin's summer", "All Hallows summer" 表示“秋老虎”、“小陽(yáng)春”這個(gè)意思。 如 "An Indian summer in the West Country brought peak holiday traffic jams in Devon yesterday." (Sunday Times,September 16, 1962)
