A retired sergeant major was continually looking up from his wristwatch. “What are you up to?” I asked him. “I've been standing here for twenty-eight minutes,” he replied, “and not one Marine has come through these doors in full uniform. I'll give fifty dollars to the first Marine who comes in dressed with spit and polish.” Within seconds, a private walked into the base decked out in his full uniform.
