A teenager in Australia has narrowly escaped with his life after falling 20 metres down a cliff.

Nathan Datson fractured his skull and broke his wrist and elbow after he slipped while climbing on a rock face at Bells Rapids, near Perth.

The 15-year-old was chasing some goats when he slipped, reports 7 News.

Remarkably drone footage caught the moment he fell.

"I'm pretty surprised that I'm still alive," he told 7News.

The footage shows him tumbling down the rock face before getting caught in a gap, which stops him falling and may have saved his life.

It took rescuers two hours to reach Datson and get him down to safety, with a volunteer helper also injured in the rescue efforts.

He remains in hospital with doctors closely monitoring his head injury.
