Mr Kudlow, a CNBC commentator and long-time associate of Mr Trump, told the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday he had accepted the job as head of the White House National Economic Council.

Recounting a conversation with Mr Trump, Mr Kudlow told the Wall Street Journal: “He said to me several times, ‘I believe in global trade. I regard myself as a global trader, but it has to be fair trade to protect America’.”

Mr Kudlow grew up in suburban New Jersey in a family that owned a textile business. He went on to become chief economist at the Wall Street firms Paine Webber and Bear Stearns.
