European leaders will mount a last-ditch effort this week to persuade president Donald Trump to stick with the landmark Paris agreement on climate change he has threatened to abandon.

The pontiff handed the US leader a copy of his 2015 encyclical on environmental protection, and Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state, specifically urged the US to stay in the Paris accords.
