Donald Trump refused to guarantee that he would accept the result of the US election if he loses, in a fiery third and final presidential debate in which Hillary Clinton accused her Republican rival of being a “puppet” of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
In recent days, as he has fallen in the polls, Mr Trump has alleged that Mrs Clinton is colluding with the media to rig the election, and called on his supporters to make sure that Democrats do not commit electoral fraud on November 8.
Asked on the debate stage in Las Vegas whether he would respect the result of the election, Mr Trump refused to commit, saying: “I will tell you at the time. I’ll keep you in suspense.”
Mrs Clinton called the statement “horrifying” and said she was appalled that her opponent was “talking down our democracy”. Mike Pence, Mr Trump’s running mate, and Kellyanne Conway, his campaign manager, had earlier said he would accept the result.
The exchange came as the White House contenders sparred over including guns, debt, abortion, immigration and foreign policy.
When Mrs Clinton was pressed over revelations contained in emails that were published by WikiLeaks, she changed the subject by pointing out that the US government had accused the Kremlin of orchestrating the hacking, and accusing Mr Trump of urging Moscow to engage in the activity and of advocating positions that benefit the Russian government.
“I don’t know Putin. He said nice things about me. If we got along well, that would be good,” Mr Trump said. “He has no respect for her; he has no respect for our president.”
“That’s because he’d rather have a puppet as president of the United States,” said Mrs Clinton. “It’s pretty clear you won’t admit that the Russians have engaged in cyber attacks against the United States of America, that you encouraged espionage against our people, that you are willing to spout the Putin line, sign up for his wish list, break up NATO, do whatever he wants to do, and that you continue to get help from him, because he has a very clear favourite in this race.”
Coming 20 days before the November 8 election, the debate is a chance for Mr Trump to shift the momentum of the race after several tough weeks that have seen him fall behind in most polls, and particularly in the key swing states he needs to win.
