The leaders of Germany, France and Italy will attempt to forge a common plan to bolster Europe’s economy and security as they gather on a tiny Mediterranean island near Naples to discuss the EU’s future after Britain’s vote to leave the union.

The summit, hosted by Italian premier Matteo Renzi, is the first act in an intensive round of international diplomacy as European leaders return from summer holidays to tackle the fallout from the Brexit referendum in June.

As Europe confronts one of the biggest crises in six decades of integration, the informal talks on the volcanic island of Ventotene mark an effort by the three countries to demonstrate their joint commitment to the EU in the wake of the British vote.

The choice of the island is symbolic. Altiero Spinelli, considered one of the bloc’s founding fathers, wrote a federalist manifesto when imprisoned there during the second world war.

“Europe needs an immediate answer on growth, youth and security issues,” said Sandro Gozi, Italian secretary of state for European affairs.

The Ventotene talks are also seen as tacit display of support for Mr Renzi by Angela Merkel, German chancellor, and François Hollande, French president, as the Italian leader heads into a difficult referendum in November on constitutional reform.
