哈佛大學(xué)新政策禁止師生戀

哈佛大學(xué)(Harvard University)日前頒布了一項(xiàng)新政策，明文禁止教授與本科生發(fā)生性關(guān)系或戀情，由此加入一個(gè)為數(shù)不多，但數(shù)量不斷增長的禁止此類關(guān)系的大學(xué)之列。此舉正值奧巴馬政府對(duì)幾十所高校處理性侵指控的方式展開調(diào)查之際。哈佛也是被調(diào)查的對(duì)象。

The ban clarifies an earlier policy that labeled sexual and romantic relationships betweenprofessors and the students they teach as inappropriate, but did not explicitly prohibitprofessors from having relationships with students they did not teach.

這項(xiàng)禁令澄清了此前一項(xiàng)政策，后者將教授及其所教學(xué)生之間的性關(guān)系和戀情稱作“不適當(dāng)”，但并未明確禁止教授與他們沒教的學(xué)生發(fā)生曖昧關(guān)系。

Harvard said Thursday that the change had been made after a panel reviewing the institution’spolicy on Title IX, the federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in education, determined thatthe university’s existing policy language on “relationships of unequal status did not explicitlyreflect the faculty’s expectations of what constituted an appropriate relationship betweenundergraduate students and faculty members.” It said the policy had been revised “to include aclear prohibition to better accord with these expectations.”

The change was recommended by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Committee on SexualMisconduct Policy and Procedures. It was made public Monday in a document revising thedivision’s sexual harassment policy.

Besides banning sexual and romantic relationships between professors and all undergraduates,the policy also bans such relationships between teaching staff, such as graduate students, andthe students who fall under their supervision or evaluation.

除了禁止教授和所有本科生發(fā)生性關(guān)系或戀情之外，這項(xiàng)政策還禁止教輔人員(比如研究生)與他們監(jiān)督或評(píng)估的學(xué)生發(fā)生這種關(guān)系。

“Our rule is that if you are supervising, evaluating or grading someone, you should not have asexual relationship with that person,” said Alison Johnson, a history professor who led thecommittee.

The American Association of University Professors does not recommend that colleges ban suchrelationships, but the organization has noted that they “are fraught with the potential forexploitation.”

It says that intimate relationships between students and professors make consent hard todetermine because of the unequal power dynamic, and leave institutions vulnerable toallegations of sexual harassment.

After the courts found in the 1990s that universities could be financially liable for sexualharassment, many institutions — among them, the University of California and Yale — adoptedformal policies forbidding sexual or romantic relationships between faculty and students.
