An Australian couple have told their family of how they dug their way out of the rubble of their collapsed apartment building to get to safety.

Joel and Rachel Hoffman, who had been working for the charity Mennonite Central Committee in the country for four months, suffered minor injuries in the earthquake.

The pair were on the fifth floor when the tremor struck.

"They were in their apartment when the quake hit, the entire building collapsed, they dug their way out and are OK. Joel had a few stitches", the couples' family posted on their blog.

"They plan to fly home as soon as possible. Their apartment is rubble, no belongings to recover. Thanks to all who have been praying. It is a miracle that they are alive."

Elsewhere in the city, a New Zealand toddler was found alive under her father's dead body.

New Zealand citizen Emily Sanson-Rejouis survived the earthquake but her Haitian husband Emmanuel and their three daughters were trapped under the hotel where the family lived.

The youngest daughter, two-year-old Alyahna, was rescued by her mother from beneath the body of Mr Sanson-Rejouis this morning.

However, the other two girls remain missing.

Ms Sanson-Rejouis's stepsister, Caroline Larnach, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the little girl was needed medical help.

"She's pretty badly injured; she's bruised and she's got at least one broken leg and maybe the other one as well," Ms Larnach said.

Ms Larnach says there are no rescue or medical workers at the building to help those who are trapped.

"We've spoken to Emily three times now and every time she says the same: 'please get emergency services to us to help these children'," Ms Larnach said.

"She can still hear at least one of her children and she's trying to get them out," she said.
