　　lad，年輕小伙，相當(dāng)于兄弟，伙計(jì)，哥們。英語中還可以用dude, fella, mate, buddy等等。

　　shelter，庇護(hù)地，可以躲避惡劣天氣或?yàn)?zāi)害的地方。并不一定必須要有房屋建筑，只要能保證安全不受自然侵害的地方都可以叫做shelter(排除野獸和人的因素)。

　　near at hand，近在咫尺，就在手邊。很好理解，和漢語的用法都一樣。

　　the means of，means的含義是方法，途徑，手段, 它并不是mean的三單或者是mean名詞形式的復(fù)數(shù)，而是單獨(dú)的詞，而且means本身是單復(fù)同形的。

　　我們來看看例句：

　　The drawing is transferred onto the wood by means of carbon paper.

　　這幅畫是通過碳紙印到木頭上的。

　　I'm so glad to have been the means of bringing you two young people together.

　　我很高興我起到了使你們兩個年輕人相識的作用。

　　means的含義就是method, process. 而by means of的含義是using the method. 一個是名詞方法，途徑。一個是詞組通過使用這種方法途徑。

　　cocksure，過分自信的，自以為是的。驕傲的公雞，非常地形象。

　　事情至此，他們別無選擇。既然命令已下，也只有照辦的份兒。

　　bound，這里是約束的意思，動詞詞性。bound有很多含義：反彈，限定，范圍，接壤等動詞詞或名詞詞性。常見的短語be bound to 是必然的意思，在這詞組里的bound是形容詞性的。
