Castellfollit de la Roca looks like a village that used to be of normal shape, then, thanks to some strange force, spread over a system of basalt rocks. The houses were pushed precariously near the edge of a narrow basalt strip, some of which were only two houses wide, up to 50 meters high, a kilometer long, and curled along cliffs overlooking the countryside and the river runs along the town below.

This small village is bordered by the confluence of the Fluvià and Toronell rivers, between which a spectacular basalt cliff. With an area of ??less than 1 square kilometer, Castellfollit de la Roca is one of the smallest villages in Spain.

The basalt cliff where the town is located was formed by the corrosive effects of the Fluvià and Toronell rivers on lava flows from volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago.

The lava, once solidified, becomes a basalt, a hard rock that has a multitude of different shapes depending on the cooling, contraction and separation. The cliff is the result of two lines of lava. The first time took place 217,000 years ago, originating in the Batet village area, and forming the rock formations. The second more recent is that the 192,000-year-old Begudà volcano forms prismatic shapes.

Perched on the edge of a cliff, the Church of Sant Salvador dates back to the 11th century, although, sadly, very few original Romanesque designs remain. For centuries it was the center of community life in the Castellfollit de la Roca and remained active until the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.
