The U.S. market for initial public offerings showed signs of strength Thursday despite broader market volatility, as a U.S. data efficiency specialist priced high and traded well while a Chinese company managed to go public despite recent doubts about offerings from that country.

Chinese children's media company Taomee Holdings Ltd. sold its stock at the low end of its range and declined.

Though Taomee's first-day decline is nothing to brag about, the fact that the company was even able to complete an IPO is notable. Chinese stocks that trade in the U.S. have been pummeled in recent weeks amid investor concerns about corporate governance and accounting issues, and trading has been suspended in several companies.

'That we were able to get it done says a lot about our company,' said Taomee's chief financial officer, Paul Keung.

Another plus on Taomee's side was a show of support in the form of a concurrent private placement of $10 million of stock with Saban Media Ventures LLC, which committed to buying the shares at the IPO price.

Taomee's stock closed at $8.23 a share on the New York Stock Exchange, down 8.6% from its IPO price of $9. A total of 7.2 million shares were sold at the low end of its expected $9 to $11 range.

Based in Shanghai, Taomee specializes in children's entertainment and media, making most of its profit from online games where children use characters to navigate virtual worlds. Total net revenue nearly doubled in the first quarter to $12.4 million from a year earlier and quintupled in 2010 to $36 million from 2009. Net income in the first quarter nearly tripled to $9.1 million and net income in 2010 hit $21.6 million compared to $1.3 million in 2009.
