Dudley and Uncle Vernon came in, both with wrinkled noses because of the smell of Harry's new uniform. Uncle Vernon opened his newspaper as usual and Dudley banged his Smelting stick, which he carried everywhere, on the table. They heard the click of the mail slot and the flop of letters on the doormat. "Get the mail, Dudley," said Uncle Vernon from behind his paper. 

達(dá)力和弗農(nóng)姨父走了進(jìn)來，兩人都皺起了鼻子，因?yàn)楣男轮品l(fā)出一股臭味。弗農(nóng)姨父像往常一樣打開報(bào)紙，達(dá)力用他隨身攜帶的斯梅爾廷手杖敲打桌子。他們聽到了信箱的咔噠聲和信件落在門墊上的聲音?！叭ツ绵]件，達(dá)力，”弗農(nóng)姨父在報(bào)紙后面說。

"Make Harry get it." "Get the mail, Harry." "Make Dudley get it." "Poke him with your Smelting stick, Dudley." Harry dodged the Smelting stick and went to get the mail. Three things lay on the doormat: a postcard from Uncle Vernon's sister Marge, who was vacationing on the Isle of Wight, a brown envelope that looked like a bill, and — a letter for Harry. Harry picked it up and stared at it, his heart twanging like a giant elastic band. No one, ever, in his whole life, had written to him. Who would? 

“讓哈利去拿?！薄叭ツ绵]件，哈利?！薄白屵_(dá)力去拿?！薄坝媚愕乃姑窢柾⑹终却了?，達(dá)力?！惫汩_斯梅爾廷手杖，去拿郵件。門墊上放著三件東西：一張明信片，是弗農(nóng)姨父的妹妹瑪吉寄來的，她當(dāng)時(shí)正在懷特島度假；一個(gè)看起來像賬單的棕色信封；還有——一封給哈利的信。哈利拿起信，盯著它看，他的心像一根巨大的橡皮筋一樣跳動(dòng)。在他的一生中，從來沒有人給他寫過信。誰會(huì)呢？

He had no friends, no other relatives — he didn't belong to the library, so he'd never even got rude notes asking for books back. Yet here it was, a letter, addressed so plainly there could be no mistake: Mr. H. Potter The Cupboard under the Stairs 4 Privet Drive Little Whinging Surrey The envelope was thick and heavy, made of yellowish parchment, and the address was written in emerald-green ink. There was no stamp. Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger, and a snake surrounding a large letter H.

 "Hurry up, boy!" shouted Uncle Vernon from the kitchen. "What are you doing, checking for letter bombs?" He chuckled at his own joke. Harry went back to the kitchen, still staring at his letter. He handed Uncle Vernon the bill and the postcard, sat down, and slowly began to open the yellow envelope. 

“快點(diǎn)，孩子！”弗農(nóng)姨父在廚房里喊道?！澳阍诟墒裁矗瑱z查信件炸彈？”他對(duì)自己說的笑話咯咯笑了起來。哈利回到廚房，仍然盯著他的信。他把賬單和明信片遞給弗農(nóng)姨父，坐下來，慢慢地開始打開黃色的信封。

Uncle Vernon ripped open the bill, snorted in disgust, and flipped over the postcard. "Marge's ill," he informed Aunt Petunia. "Ate a funny whelk..." "Dad!" said Dudley suddenly. "Dad, Harry's got something!" Harry was on the point of unfolding his letter, which was written on the same heavy parchment as the envelope when it was jerked sharply out of his hand by Uncle Vernon.

 "That's mine!" said Harry, trying to snatch it back. "Who'd be writing to you?" sneered Uncle Vernon, shaking the letter open with one hand and glancing at it. His face went from red to green faster than a set of traffic lights. And it didn't stop there. Within seconds it was the grayish white of old porridge. "P-P-Petunia!" he gasped. Dudley tried to grab the letter to read it, but Uncle Vernon held it high out of his reach.

Aunt Petunia took it curiously and read the first line. For a moment it looked as though she might faint. She clutched her throat and made a choking noise. "Vernon! Oh my goodness — Vernon!" They stared at each other, seeming to have forgotten that Harry and Dudley were still in the room. Dudley wasn't used to being ignored. 

佩妮姨媽好奇地接過信，讀了第一行。有那么一刻，她似乎要暈過去了。她捂住喉嚨，發(fā)出一聲哽咽的聲音。“弗農(nóng)！哦，我的天哪——弗農(nóng)！”他們互相盯著看，似乎忘記了哈利和達(dá)力還在房間里。達(dá)力不習(xí)慣被忽視。

He gave his father a sharp tap on the head with his Smelting stick. "I want to read that letter," he said loudly. "I want to read it," said Harry furiously, "as it's mine." "Get out, both of you," croaked Uncle Vernon, stuffing the letter back inside its envelope. Harry didn't move. "I WANT MY LETTER!" he shouted. "Let me see it!" demanded Dudley. "OUT!" roared Uncle Vernon, and he took both Harry and Dudley by the scruffs of their necks and threw them into the hall, slamming the kitchen door behind them.
