You can buy chewing gum in nearly every country in the world. But it wasn't always like that.

The American Indians were the first people to chew gum. This gum came from a kind of special trees that grew on their land.It was said chewing gum could help keep teeth clean. In 1848,a sailor called John Curtis began selling it.He was the first person to sell chewing gum.The gum being sold cost just a few cents for two pieces. It became popular very quickly even though it was very hard to chew. Now other things are put into the gum to make it soft and sweet.

By 1890,there were hundreds of different chewing gum.The most famous name in chewing gum, however,is probably William Wrigley. He spent a lot of money on ads and even sent free pieces of gum to children on their birthdays. He said that chewing gum helped people work better and that it could stop people from feeling tired. He did not care whether he told the truth about chewing gum or not—as long as he sold lots of gum.He knew that if he could get children to chew gum, they would go on buying chewing gum for many years. So his Juicy Fruit and Spearmint flavors were soon very successful.

Now many millions of people chew gum, especially children. No matter what they do,they like to chew gum, even in class.Teachers think it's a problem.Another problem is that when some students have chewed all the taste out of their pieces of gum, they take them out of their mouths and put them on to the chairs, the ground or other places. It's difficult to clean up.So many schools in China don't allow the students to chew gum at school. But some students often break the rule.
