348　begin, start和begin with

1　表示“開始”時，begin和start 常可換用，結(jié)構(gòu)為：

begin/ start sth.

begin/ start to do sth./ doing sth.

begin/ start at/ on+時間名詞

begin with sth./ sb.

They begin/start work at 8 every morning. 他們每天早晨8點鐘開始工作。

She began/started to learn English at the age of five. 她5歲開始學(xué)習(xí)英語。

He began/started making preparations for the trip. 他開始為旅行做準(zhǔn)備。

The play begins with the sisters in the kitchen together. 這部戲以姐妹們在廚房相聚開始。

The meeting will begin/start on Monday and end on Friday. 會議將在星期一開始，星期五結(jié)束。

提示

①begin to do和begin doing均表示“開始做……”，意思上幾乎沒有什么差別。主語是人時，多用begin to do。

The snow began to melt. 雪開始融化了。

The water is beginning to boil. 水逐漸沸騰起來。

②若begin為進行時，要用begin to do。另外，begin to understand, begin to feel為習(xí)慣用法。

She's beginning to feel better. 她漸漸覺得好些了。

John began to understand the situation. 約翰開始了解情況。

③表示某種習(xí)慣性、長期性的行為，常用begin doing。

I left teaching in 2007 and began working in my present job. 我2007年離開教學(xué)崗位，開始我現(xiàn)在的工作。

2　表示“出發(fā)，旅行，開動（機器），（機器）運轉(zhuǎn)，創(chuàng)辦，開設(shè)”等時，只能用start ，不可用begin 。

At daybreak they started on their journey. 天亮?xí)r他們出發(fā)了。（不用begin ）

At last the train started . 火車終于開動了。（不用begin ）

We couldn't start the car. 我們無法開動這部車。（不用begin ）

He started a new company last month. 他上個月新開了一家公司。

提示

start作“動身”解時，往往要用一般現(xiàn)在時或現(xiàn)在進行時代替一般將來時。

She starts for America next month. 她下個月動身去美國。

She is starting for America next month.

3　begin with 表示“以……開始，以……開端”，后跟名詞。

They will begin with Lesson One. 他們將從第一課開始。

The book begins with a tale of country life. 這本書以一則農(nóng)村生活故事開始。

提示

to begin with和to start with都是習(xí)慣用語，意為“首先，第一”，用作狀語，常用于句首，常用逗號同句中的其他成分隔開。

To begin with , we ought to know what we study for. 首先，我們應(yīng)該明確學(xué)習(xí)目的。

I can't go there with you; to start with , no one can take over my job；econdly, I have not enough money. 我不能同你去那里；首先，沒有人能接替我的工作，其次，我沒有足夠的錢。
