包裝包括運輸包裝（即外包裝或大包裝）和銷售包裝（即內包裝或小包裝），這些都是為了保護商品的品質完好和數量完整而采取的措施。具體來說，運輸包裝不僅要起到能防止貨物運輸途中受損的作用，同時也應具備裝卸方便、貯存和防盜的功能。

包裝問題在對外貿易中十分重要，許多糾紛都是因為包裝不當造成的。因此，一方面我們得加強包裝質量；另一方面，在訂立相關包裝條款時，要注意以下兩點：一是包裝材料和方式，如木箱裝、紙箱裝、麻袋裝等，并根據需要加注尺寸、商品重量或數量、加固條件等；二是運輸標志，按國際慣例，一般由賣方設計確定，也可由買方決定。但在簽約時，進口單位必須提出明確的要求和責任，以減少運輸過程中不必要的損失。

outer packing是指“外包裝”，也可以說是“運輸包裝”；對應inner packing（內包裝，也常被說成銷售包裝）。

chance one's arm冒險

15世紀時，愛爾蘭的兩個家族奧默（Ormond）和基爾代爾（Kildare）長期為敵。1942年，他們之間又發(fā)生了一場世仇之斗，奧默伯爵因不敵對方，便帶領著家族躲進了圣派崔克大教堂（St. Partrick's Cathedral）做最后的抵抗。將教堂團團圍住的基爾代爾家族，突然覺得這場沖突毫無意義，于是當中的菲茨杰拉伯爵便隔著門對奧默家族喊話，希望能停止打斗，雙方互相議和。

為了證明自己的誠意，菲茨杰拉伯爵將門打了一個洞，冒著生命危險將自己的手伸進去。這個舉動使奧默家族非常感動，紛紛上前熱烈地握住他的手，兩家族之間的世仇也就此結束。

因此，“以自己的手臂冒險”一誤也就用來形容（盡管可能失敗）仍冒險一試。例如：If you want to succeed, you have to chance your arm.（如果您想要成功，就必須冒險。）

A：And a picture of it should be printed on top of the cardboard box.

B：Yes, packing like this will be more attractive. Thank you for your recommendation on improving the packing.

A：But this kind of packing costs more. Our prices are quoted excluding the packing improvement.

B：It doesn't matter. The packing improvement expenses should be on our account.

A：That's quite fair. The product should be put in a plastic wrapper. One in each, and then packed in a cardboard box. How many products should be packed in an export carton?

B：Twenty of them make a carton, standard export cartons.

A：Don't you think that wood case is all right?

B：Cartons are comparatively light, and therefore easy to handle.

A：You should make sure that the cartons are quite seaworthy too.

B：No problem.
