What a world of merriment their melody foretells!

How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, in the icy air of night!

while the stars, that oversprinkle all the heavens, seem to twinkle with a crystalline delight;
那天空中灑落的點點星辰，也似在發(fā)出水晶般的清脆笑聲；
keeping time, time, time, in a sort of Runic rhyme,
和著拍子，不停地，響著，以某種神秘的古老旋律，
to the tintinnabulation that so musically wells from the bells,
伴著那叮叮當當悅耳的鈴聲，

in a clamorous appealing to the mercy of the fire, in a mad expostulation with the deaf and frantic fire,

What a world of solemn thought their monody compels!
哀婉的悼詞，氣氛莊嚴肅穆！
In the silence of the night how we shiver with affright at the melancholy menace of their tone;
寂靜的夜幕下，那憂郁的聲音響起，人們不寒而栗；
for every sound that floats from the rust within their throats is a groan.
只因鐵銹里發(fā)出的，是一聲聲悲傷的呻吟。
And the people—ah, the people—they that dwell up in the steeple all alone, and who, tolling, tolling, tolling,

in that muffled monotone, feel a glory in so rolling on the human heart a stone—
