Hear the sledges with the bells—silver bells!
聽,雪橇聲——那是銀鈴鐺發(fā)出的聲音!
What a world of merriment their melody foretells!

How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, in the icy air of night!
那鈴聲叮當(dāng)、叮當(dāng)、叮當(dāng)?shù)仨懼?,劃破了夜的寂靜!
while the stars, that oversprinkle all the heavens, seem to twinkle with a crystalline delight;
那天空中灑落的點(diǎn)點(diǎn)星辰,也似在發(fā)出水晶般的清脆笑聲;
keeping time, time, time, in a sort of Runic rhyme,
和著拍子,不停地,響著,以某種神秘的古老旋律,
to the tintinnabulation that so musically wells from the bells,

What a world of solemn thought their monody compels!
哀婉的悼詞,氣氛莊嚴(yán)肅穆!
In the silence of the night how we shiver with affright at the melancholy menace of their tone;
寂靜的夜幕下,那憂郁的聲音響起,人們不寒而栗;
for every sound that floats from the rust within their throats is a groan.
只因鐵銹里發(fā)出的,是一聲聲悲傷的呻吟。
And the people—ah, the people—they that dwell up in the steeple all alone, and who, tolling, tolling, tolling,
那些人——啊,那些人——那些住在塔尖上形單影只的人,是他們敲響了這怨鐘,敲著,不停地敲著,
in that muffled monotone, feel a glory in so rolling on the human heart a stone—

they are neither man nor woman—they are neither brute nor human—they are Ghouls!
