第二十五 克萊爾女爵

It was the time when lilies blow,

百合花盛開時節(jié)，

And clouds are highest up in air,

白云高高地飄在天際，

Lord Ronald brought a lily-white doe

羅納德勛爵帶來一只雪白的小鹿

To give his cousin, Lady Clare.

送給他的表妹，克萊爾女爵作為心意。

I trow they did not part in scorn;

他們的相愛不離我看在眼里；

Lovers long betrothed were they:

這對情人早已訂婚，

They two will wed the morrow morn;

次日早晨他們即將步入婚姻的殿堂，

God's blessing on the day.

那時上帝會賜予他們新婚的祝福。

"He does not love me for my birth,

“他的愛與我的血統(tǒng)出身沒有關(guān)系，

Nor for my lands, so broad and fair;

也不是因為我遼闊的土地和財產(chǎn)，

He loves me for my own true worth,

他愛我本人高尚而優(yōu)雅的，

And that is well," said Lady Clare.

品性和氣質(zhì)，“克萊爾女爵說道。

In there came old Alice the nurse;

年老的奶媽愛麗絲走進來問道，

Said, "Who was this that went from thee?"—

“從你身邊走出去的人是誰??？“

"It was my cousin," said Lady Clare;

“那位是我的表兄，“克萊爾女爵回答；

"To-morrow he weds with me."

“明天他就要和我喜結(jié)連理。“

"O God be thanked!" said Alice the nurse,

愛麗絲說道“感謝親愛的上帝?。　?/p>

"That all comes round so just and fair;—

“這結(jié)局多么的完美如意，

Lord Ronald is heir of all your lands,

因為你并不是克萊爾女爵，

And you are not the Lady Clare."

羅納德勛爵會繼承這里所有的土地?！?/p>

"Are ye out of your mind, my nurse, my nurse,"

“我的奶媽，你的腦子糊涂了嗎?

Said Lady Clare, "that ye speak so wild?"—

為什么如此胡言亂語？“

"As God's above," said Alice the nurse,

愛麗絲說：“老天在上，

"I speak the truth—you are my child.

告訴你實話，——你就是我的孩子?！?/p>

"The old Earl's daughter died at my breast—

“老伯爵的女兒死在我的懷里，

I speak the truth, as I live by bread!

我講的是真話，一點不假，

I buried her like my own sweet child,

我把她當(dāng)我的親身寶貝埋葬，

And put my child in her stead."

然后讓我的孩子頂替她的身份位置?！?/p>

"Falsely, falsely have ye done,

“荒唐啊，你做的事荒唐之極，

O mother," she said, "if this be true;

我的母親，如果這一切都是事實，

To keep the best man under the sun

我要去告訴他讓真相大白，

So many years from his due."

多年來他一直是蒙在鼓里?！?/p>

"Nay, now, my child," said Alice the nurse;

“現(xiàn)在不要，我的孩子”，愛麗絲著急說道，

"But keep the secret for your life,

“你要終身保守這個秘密，

And all you have will be Lord Ronald's

當(dāng)你們結(jié)為了夫妻，

When you are man and wife."

你的所有還會屬于羅納德勛爵?！?/p>

"If I'm a beggar born," she said,

“如果我出身貧寒”，她說，

"I will speak out, for I dare not lie;—

“我會說出真相來，因為我不敢撒謊

Pull off, pull off the brooch of gold,

摘下，都摘下黃金的胸針，

And fling the diamond necklace by!"

還有鉆石項鏈也將棄之一邊！“

"Nay, now, my child," said Alice the nurse,

“我的孩子，現(xiàn)在不要，”愛麗絲哀求道，
