The boat is lowered, the boatmen row,

他們放下了下船，船夫劃著小船，

And to the Inchcape Rock they go:

到達印奇角巖石后：

Sir Ralph bent over from the boat,

拉爾夫爵士從船上彎下腰，

And he cut the bell from the Inchcape float.

將大鐘的印奇角浮標割斷。

Down sank the bell with a gurgling sound,

鐘下沉時發(fā)出斷斷續(xù)續(xù)的咕嚕音，

The bubbles arose and burst around;

水面上冒起水泡并向四周擴散；

Quoth Sir Ralph, "The next who comes to this rock

拉爾夫爵士說：“下一個到這塊巖石的人

Will not bless the Abbot of Aberbrothock."

不會再稱贊艾布洛撒克方丈了。”

Sir Ralph the Rover sailed away,

拉爾夫爵士駕船遠去了，

He scoured the seas for many a day;

他已經(jīng)在海上漂泊多天；

And now, grown rich with plundered store,

現(xiàn)在的他滿載戰(zhàn)利品歸來，一夜暴富，

He steers his course to Scotland's shore.

他順著去往蘇格蘭海岸的航線行駛。

So thick a haze o'er spreads the sky,

濃霧籠罩天空，

They cannot see the sun on high:

遮住了太陽的蹤影：

The wind hath blown a gale all day,

大風一天都在怒吼，

At evening it hath died away.

到了晚上漸漸平息下去。

"Canst hear," said one, " the breakers roar?

“聽不到，”一個人說道，“海浪在咆哮”

For me thinks we should be near the shore;

我覺得，我們應該已經(jīng)離岸不遠了；

Now where we are I cannot tell,

現(xiàn)在我也說不準我們在哪，

But I wish I could hear the Inchcape Bell!"

They hear no sound, the swell is strong;

他們沒有聽到聲音，海潮的聲音很響；

Though the wind hath fallen, they drift along,

雖然風有所減弱，但依在助長海水的聲勢，

Till the vessel strikes with a shivering shock—

直到船撞上了一塊抖動的巖石——

O heavens! it is the Inchcape Rock!

噢，天吶！是印奇角巖石！

Sir Ralph the Rover tore his hair;

He cursed himself in his despair:

絕望地詛咒自己；

The waves rush in on every side,

海浪從各個地方滲入，

The ship is sinking beneath the tide!
