第六課 再試一次

I．

一、

"Have you finished your lesson, George?" said Mr. Prentice to his son, who had laid aside his book and was busily engaged in making a large paper kite.

“喬治，你的功課做完了嗎？”普倫蒂斯先生對(duì)他的兒子說(shuō)。他兒子早放下了課本，正忙著用紙做一個(gè)大風(fēng)箏。

"No, father," replied George, hanging down his head.

“沒(méi)有，爸爸。”喬治垂下腦袋回答到。

"Why not, my son?"

“為什么不做完，兒子？”

"Because it is so difficult, father. I am sure that I shall never learn it. Besides, I could not remember it after I had learned it, my memory is so bad."

“因?yàn)樘y了，爸爸，我肯定永遠(yuǎn)學(xué)不會(huì)。而且，學(xué)完我也記不住，我的記性太差。”

"If I were to promise you a holiday on the thirtieth of the month after next, do you think you would forget the date?"

“如果我答應(yīng)你下下個(gè)月的30號(hào)放假，你會(huì)忘記日期嗎？”

"No, I am pretty sure that I should not."

“不，我確定不會(huì)忘記。”

"You are first-rate at skating, and flying your kite, and playing at ball and marbles, are you not?"

“滑冰、放風(fēng)箏、打球、玩彈子游戲，你都很在行，不是嗎？”

"Yes, father."

“是的，爸爸。”

"And yet you cannot learn your lesson! My dear boy, you are deceiving yourself. You can learn as well as any one, if you will only try."

“但你卻學(xué)不會(huì)你的課文！親愛(ài)的兒子，你在騙自己。如果你愿意試試的話，你能學(xué)得和別人一樣好。”

"But have I not tried, father?" again urged George.

“但我不是沒(méi)試過(guò)吧，爸爸？”喬治再次辯解到。

"Well, try again. Come, for this afternoon lay aside that kite you are making, and give another effort to get your lesson ready.

“嗯，再試一次。來(lái)，今天下午放下你在做的風(fēng)箏，再努力一次把功課做好。

Be in earnest, and you will soon learn it. To show you that it only requires perseverance, I will tell you a story:

認(rèn)真一點(diǎn)，你很快就能學(xué)會(huì)。我給你講一個(gè)故事，向你證明這只是需要堅(jiān)持不懈而已：

"One of the dullest boys at a village school, more than thirty years ago, went up to repeat his lesson one morning; and, as usual, did not know it.

“三十多年前的一個(gè)早上，村中一所學(xué)校里最遲鈍的一個(gè)男孩站起來(lái)復(fù)述課文；像往常一樣，他不會(huì)。

'Go to your seat!' said the teacher angrily. 'If you don't pay more attention to your lessons you will never be fit for anything.'

‘回你的座位去！’老師生氣地說(shuō)。‘如果你不專心學(xué)功課，將一事無(wú)成。’”

"The poor boy stole off to his seat, and bent his eyes again upon his lesson."

“可憐的男孩悄悄地遛回座位，眼睛再次落到課文上。”

"It is of no use; I cannot learn, he said in a whisper to a companion who sat near him."

“這是沒(méi)用的，我學(xué)不會(huì)，他對(duì)坐在旁邊的同伴低聲說(shuō)。”

"You must try hard,' replied the kind-hearted boy."

“你一定要努力，善良的男孩回答。”

"I have tried, but it is of no use; I may just as well give up at once."

“我試過(guò)了，但沒(méi)用；我還是馬上放棄的好。”

"Try again, Henry! whispered his companion, in an earnest and encouraging tone."

“再試一次，亨利！他的同伴用誠(chéng)懇而又鼓舞人的語(yǔ)氣低聲說(shuō)。”
