LESSON 38 The duke and the cow-boy

第三十八課 公爵與牛仔

A Scotch nobleman, who was very fond of farming, had bought a cow, from a gentleman who lived near him. The cow was to be sent home next morning. Early in the morning, as the duke was taking a walk, he saw a boy trying in vain to drive the cow to his house. The cow was very unruly, and the poor boy could not manage her at all.

有一個(gè)很喜歡耕作的蘇格蘭貴族從他家附近買了一頭牛。第二天早上牛就會(huì)送到他家。一大早，公爵在散步時(shí)看見一個(gè)男孩趕著牛往他家走，但是牛一動(dòng)不動(dòng)。這頭牛很犟，這個(gè)可憐的男孩根本沒有辦法控制它。

The boy, not knowing the duke, bawled out to him, "Hello, man! come here and help me with this beast." The duke walked slowly on, not seeming to notice the boy, who still kept calling for his help. At last, finding that he could not get on with the cow, he cried out in distress, "Come here, man, and help me, and I'll give you half of whatever I get."

男孩不認(rèn)識(shí)公爵，就向他喊道，“你好！請(qǐng)過來(lái)幫幫我牽這頭牛吧。”公爵繼續(xù)閑庭信步，好像沒有注意到男孩一樣，而男孩還在一直尋求幫助。最后，男孩發(fā)現(xiàn)無(wú)法駕馭這頭牛，索性大哭起來(lái)，“先生，過來(lái)幫幫我，我會(huì)將我的所得分給你一半。”

The duke went and lent a helping hand.

公爵這時(shí)過去幫忙了。

"And now," said the duke, as they trudged along after the cow, "how much do you think you will get for the job?"

“那么現(xiàn)在，”在趕牛的路上公爵說(shuō)道，“你覺得你能從這份工作掙得多少呢？”

"I don't know," said the boy; "but I am sure of something for the folk up at the big house are good to every body."

“不知道，”男孩說(shuō)；“但是我可以確定的是那棟大房子里的人對(duì)每個(gè)人都很好。”

On coming to a lane near the house, the duke slipped away from the boy, and reached home by a different road. Calling a servant, he put a sovereign into his hand, saying, "Give that to the boy who brought the cow."

走到房子附近一條小道時(shí)，公爵悄悄從另一條路溜走了，提前回到了家。他叫來(lái)仆人，給了他一磅金幣，說(shuō)道：“把這個(gè)給牽牛過來(lái)的男孩。”

He then returned to the end of the lane, where he had parted from the boy, so as to meet him on his way back.

然后他又回到和男孩分開的地方，以便男孩回來(lái)時(shí)能看到他。

"Well, how much did you get?" asked the duke.

“你掙了多少錢？”公爵問道。

"A shilling," said the boy; "and there's half of it to you."

“一個(gè)先令，”男孩說(shuō)；“給你一半。”

"But surely you got more than a shilling?" said the duke.

“你肯定得了不止一先令吧？”公爵說(shuō)道。

"No," said the boy; "that is all I got; and I think it quite enough."

“不，”男孩說(shuō)；“我就得到了這么多；而且我覺得夠多了。”

"I do not," said the duke; "there must be something wrong; and as I am a friend of the duke, if you return, I think I'll see that you get more."

“我不信，”公爵說(shuō)；“我是那位公爵的朋友，你跟我回去，我去問問他到底給了你多少。”

They went back. The duke rang the bell, and ordered all the servants to be assembled.

他們回到了公爵家。公爵按響了門鈴，命令所有的仆人集合。

"Now," said the duke to the boy, "point me out the person who gave you the shilling."

“現(xiàn)在，”公爵對(duì)男孩說(shuō)，“指給我看是誰(shuí)給了你一先令。”

"It was that man there," said he, pointing to the butler.

“是那邊那個(gè)人，”男孩指向男管家。

The butler fell on his knees, confessed his fault, and begged to be forgiven; but the duke ordered him to give the boy the sovereign, and quit his service at once. "You have lost," said the duke, "both your place and your character, by your deceit. Learn for the future that honesty is the best policy."

男管家撲通跪下了認(rèn)錯(cuò)，請(qǐng)求原諒；但是公爵命令他把那個(gè)英鎊給男孩，并且還把他辭退了。“你失去了”公爵說(shuō)，“工作和人格，因?yàn)槟悴徽\(chéng)實(shí)。以后要記住，誠(chéng)實(shí)才是上策。”

The boy now found out who it was that had helped him to drive the cow; and the duke was so pleased with the manliness and honesty of the boy, that he sent him to school, and paid for him out of his own pocket.

男孩現(xiàn)在知道了幫他趕牛的人是誰(shuí)；公爵對(duì)男孩的勇敢和誠(chéng)實(shí)很是贊賞。他把他送到學(xué)校，自己掏錢供他上學(xué)。
