"What could she mean by that note, Mr. Holmes? Do you think it points to suicide?"

"No, no, nothing of the kind. It is perhaps the best possible solution.

I trust, Mr. Holder, that you are nearing the end of your troubles."

我相信，霍爾德先生，你的這些苦惱事快要結(jié)束了。"

"Ha! You say so! You have heard something, Mr. Holmes; you have learned something! Where are the gems?"

"哈！你肯定是這樣？你聽(tīng)見(jiàn)了什么，福爾摩斯先生，你聽(tīng)到了什么消息？那些綠玉在哪里？""

"You would not think 1000 pounds apiece an excessive sum for them?"

你不認(rèn)為一千英鎊一塊綠玉的價(jià)錢(qián)太大吧？"

"I would pay ten."

"我情愿付出一萬(wàn)英鎊。"

"That would be unnecessary. Three thousand will cover the matter. And there is a little reward, I fancy.

"這沒(méi)有必要。這件事三千英鎊就夠用了。我想，還有一筆小小的酬金。

Have you your check-book? Here is a pen. Better make it out for 4000 pounds."

你帶著支票簿沒(méi)有？給你這支筆，開(kāi)一張四千英鎊的支票好了。"

With a dazed face the banker made out the required check.

這位銀行家神色茫然地如數(shù)開(kāi)了支票。

Holmes walked over to his desk, took out a little triangular piece of gold with three gems in it, and threw it down upon the table.

福爾摩斯走到他的寫(xiě)字臺(tái)前，取出一個(gè)小小的三角形的金紙包，里面有三塊綠玉，順手將它扔在桌子上。

With a shriek of joy our client clutched it up. "You have it!" he gasped. "I am saved! I am saved!"

我們的委托人一聲喜悅的尖叫，一把將它抓在手中。"你弄到手了！"他急促地說(shuō)，"我得救了！我得救了！"

The reaction of joy was as passionate as his grief had been, and he hugged his recovered gems to his bosom.

這喜悅的反應(yīng)和他以前的愁苦一樣激烈。他將這幾顆重新獲得的綠玉緊緊地貼在胸前。
