I was shaken but not hurt by the fall; so I picked myself up and rushed off among the bushes as hard as I could run,

for I understood that I was far from being out of danger yet.

我明白我還遠(yuǎn)未脫離危險(xiǎn)。

Suddenly, however, as I ran, a deadly dizziness and sickness came over me.

I glanced down at my hand, which was throbbing painfully,

我瞅了一眼那只疼得陣陣抽搐的手，

and then, for the first time, saw that my thumb had been cut off and that the blood was pouring from my wound.

I endeavoured to tie my handkerchief round it, but there came a sudden buzzing in my ears,

我竭盡全力用手帕把傷口裹了起來，這時(shí)突然一陣耳鳴，

and next moment I fell in a dead faint among the rose-bushes.

接著我就昏厥過去，倒在薔薇的花叢之中。

How long I remained unconscious I cannot tell.

我不知道我昏迷了有多久。

It must have been a very long time, for the moon had sunk, and a bright morning was breaking when I came to myself.

時(shí)間一定很長(zhǎng)，因?yàn)楫?dāng)我蘇醒過來時(shí)，正是星沉月落，旭日東升。

My clothes were all sodden with dew, and my coat-sleeve was drenched with blood from my wounded thumb.

我的衣服全被露水浸濕了，袖子被傷口的血浸透了。

The smarting of it recalled in an instant all the particulars of my night's adventure,

傷口劇烈的疼痛立刻使我回憶起夜里的危險(xiǎn)遭遇，

and I sprang to my feet with the feeling that I might hardly yet be safe from my pursuers.

一想到我可能還沒有擺脫追趕我的人，我頓時(shí)就跳了來。

But to my astonishment, when I came to look round me, neither house nor garden were to be seen.

但是使我大吃一驚的是，當(dāng)我朝周圍張望的時(shí)候，既看不到房子，也看不到花園。

I had been lying in an angle of the hedge close by the highroad,

原來我一直躺在緊挨著公路的樹籬的一個(gè)角落里，

and just a little lower down was a long building, which proved, upon my approaching it,

前面不遠(yuǎn)是一座長(zhǎng)長(zhǎng)的建筑物，當(dāng)我走近看時(shí)，

to be the very station at which I had arrived upon the previous night.

原來就是我昨天晚上下車的那個(gè)車站。

Were it not for the ugly wound upon my hand, all that had passed during those dreadful hours might have been an evil dream.

要不是有我手上這個(gè)嚇人的傷口，在這一段可怕的時(shí)間里所發(fā)生的一切，很可能只不過是一場(chǎng)惡夢(mèng)。
