He unwound the handkerchief and held out his hand.
他解開手帕，將手伸了出來。
It gave even my hardened nerves a shudder to look at it.

There were four protruding fingers and a horrid red, spongy surface where the thumb should have been.
只見四根突出的手指和一片鮮紅可怕的海綿狀斷面，這里本來該是大拇指的部位。
It had been hacked or torn right out from the roots.
大拇指已被迫根剁掉或硬拽下來了。
"Good heavens!" I cried, "this is a terrible injury. It must have bled considerably."
"天哪！"我喊著，"多么可怕的創(chuàng)傷，一定流了不少血。"
"Yes, it did. I fainted when it was done, and I think that I must have been senseless for a long time.
"是的，流了不少血。受傷后我昏迷過去，我相信我一定有很長一段時間失去了知覺。
When I came to I found that it was still bleeding,
等我蘇醒過來時，我發(fā)現(xiàn)它還在流血，
so I tied one end of my handkerchief very tightly round the wrist and braced it up with a twig."
于是我把手帕的一端緊緊地纏在手腕上，并用一根小樹枝把它繃緊。"
"Excellent! You should have been a surgeon."
"包扎得好極了！您本應該當一名外科醫(yī)生才對！"
"It is a question of hydraulics, you see, and came within my own province."

"This has been done," said I, examining the wound, "by a very heavy and sharp instrument."
"這是用一件非常沉重、鋒利的器具砍的。"我邊檢查傷口邊說道。
"A thing like a cleaver," said he.
"像是用屠夫的切肉刀砍的。"他說。
"An accident, I presume?" "By no means."
"我想，這是意外事故，對嗎？""決不是。"
"What! a murderous attack?" "Very murderous indeed." "You horrify me."
"什么？是有人蓄意兇殘地砍的嗎？""嗯，確實極其兇殘。""真嚇人。"
