As I ran down the passage, my sister's door was unlocked, and revolved slowly upon its hinges.

就在我順著過道跑過去的時候，只看見我姐姐的門鎖已開，房門正在慢慢地移動著。

I stared at it horror-stricken, not knowing what was about to issue from it.

我嚇呆了，瞪著雙眼看著，不知道會有什么東西從門里出來。

By the light of the corridor-lamp I saw my sister appear at the opening,

借著過道的燈光，我看見我姐姐出現(xiàn)在房門口，

her face blanched with terror, her hands groping for help, her whole figure swaying to and fro like that of a drunkard.

她的臉由于恐懼而雪白如紙，雙手摸索著尋求援救，整個身體就象醉漢一樣搖搖晃晃。

I ran to her and threw my arms round her, but at that moment her knees seemed to give way and she fell to the ground.

我跑上前去，雙手擁抱住她。這時只見她似乎雙膝無力，頹然跌倒在地。

She writhed as one who is in terrible pain, and her limbs were dreadfully convulsed.

她象一個正在經(jīng)受劇痛的人那樣翻滾扭動，她的四肢可怕地抽搐。

At first I thought that she had not recognized me,

起初我以為她沒有認(rèn)出是我，

but as I bent over her she suddenly shrieked out in a voice which I shall never forget,

可是當(dāng)我俯身要抱她時，她突然發(fā)出凄厲的叫喊，那叫聲我是一輩子也忘不了的。

'Oh, my God! Helen! It was the band! The speckled band!'

'唉，海倫！天??！是那條帶子！那條帶斑點的帶子！'

There was something else which she would fain have said,

她似乎言猶未盡，還很想說些別的什么，

and she stabbed with her finger into the air in the direction of the doctor's room,

她把手舉在空中，指向醫(yī)生的房間，

but a fresh convulsion seized her and choked her words.

但是抽搐再次發(fā)作，她說不出話來了。

I rushed out, calling loudly for my stepfather, and I met him hastening from his room in his dressing-gown.

我疾步奔跑出去，大聲喊我的繼父，正碰上他穿著睡衣，急急忙忙地從他的房間趕過來。

When he reached my sister's side she was unconscious,

他趕到我姐姐身邊時，我姐姐已經(jīng)不省人事了。

and though he poured brandy down her throat and sent for medical aid from the village,

盡管他給她灌下了白蘭地，并從村里請來了醫(yī)生，

all efforts were in vain, for she slowly sank and died without having recovered her consciousness.

但一切努力都是徒勞無功的，因為她已奄奄一息，瀕臨死亡，直至咽氣之前，再也沒有重新蘇醒。

Such was the dreadful end of my beloved sister."

這就是我那親愛的姐姐的悲慘結(jié)局。"
