Sherlock Holmes bent down to it and instantly rose again with a sharp intaking of the breath.

歇洛克·福爾摩斯彎下腰從鑰匙孔往里看了看，立刻又站起來(lái)，倒吸了一大口氣。

"There is something devilish in this, Watson," said he, more moved than I had ever before seen him. "What do you make of it?"

我從來(lái)沒(méi)有看見(jiàn)過(guò)他這樣激動(dòng)。他說(shuō)："華生，這兒確實(shí)是有點(diǎn)可怕，你來(lái)看看這是怎么一回事。"

I stooped to the hole and recoiled in horror.

The features were set, however, in a horrible smile, a fixed and unnatural grin,

一種可怕的獰笑，一種不自然露出牙齒的笑。

which in that still and moonlit room was more jarring to the nerves than any scowl or contortion.

在這樣沉寂和月光照耀之下的屋里，看到這樣的笑臉，比看到愁眉苦臉的樣子更使人毛骨悚然。

So like was the face to that of our little friend that I looked round at him to make sure that he was indeed with us.

One of these appeared to leak or to have been broken, for a stream of dark- coloured liquid had trickled out from it,

He was stiff and cold and had clearly been dead many hours.

看來(lái)不只他的面孔表情特別，

It seemed to me that not only his features but all his limbs were twisted and turned in the most fantastic fashion.

就是他的四肢也蜷曲得和正常死人不同。

By his hand upon the table there lay a peculiar instrument–a brown, close-grained stick,

他那扶在桌子上的一只手旁邊，放著一個(gè)奇怪的器具

with a stone head like a hammer, rudely lashed on with coarse twine.

一個(gè)粗糙的棕色木棒，上面用粗麻線捆著一塊石頭，象是一把錘子。

Beside it was a torn sheet of note-paper with some words scrawled upon it.

旁邊放著一張從記事簿上撕下來(lái)的破紙，上邊潦草地寫(xiě)著幾個(gè)字。
