"When we entered his room he was propped up with pillows and breathing heavily.

"當(dāng)我們走進(jìn)房間的時候，他呼吸急促地倚在高枕上面。

He besought us to lock the door and to come upon either side of the bed.

他叫我們把門鎖上，到床的兩旁來。

Then grasping our hands he made a remarkable statement to us in a voice which was broken as much by emotion as by pain.

他緊握我們的手，因?yàn)橥纯嚯y堪而又感情激動，所以斷斷續(xù)續(xù)地告訴了我們一件驚人的事。

I shall try and give it to you in his own very words.

'I will tell you how Morstan died,' he continued.

'He had suffered for years from a weak heart, but he concealed it from every one. I alone knew it.

他多年以來，心臟就衰弱，可是他從未告訴過人，只有我一個人知道。

When in India, he and I, through a remarkable chain of circumstances, came into possession of a considerable treasure.

在印度的時候，我和他經(jīng)過一系列的驚奇事故，得到了一大批寶物。

I brought it over to England, and on the night of Morstan's arrival he came straight over here to claim his share.

He walked over from the station and was admitted by my faithful old Lal Chowdar, who is now dead.

Morstan and I had a difference of opinion as to the division of the treasure, and we came to heated words.

'For a long time I sat half distracted, wondering what I should do.

'我在椅子上坐了好久，精神錯亂，不知如何是好。

My first impulse was, of course, to call for assistance;

開始時我自然也想到應(yīng)該報告警署，

but I could not but recognize that there was every chance that I would be accused of his murder.

可是我考慮到當(dāng)時的情況，我恐怕無法避免要被指為兇手。

His death at the moment of a quarrel, and the gash in his head, would be black against me.

他是在我們爭論當(dāng)中斷氣的，他頭上的傷口對我更是不利。

Again, an official inquiry could not be made without bringing out some facts about the treasure,

還有，在法庭上未免要問到寶物的來源，

which I was particularly anxious to keep secret.

這更是我特別要保守秘密的。

He had told me that no soul upon earth knew where he had gone.

他告訴過我：沒有一個人知道他來這里。

There seemed to be no necessity why any soul ever should know."

因此這件事似乎沒有叫別人知道的必要。"
