LESSON 33 The traveller and the lion

第三十三課 旅客與獅子

A traveller in South Africa once set out on a long journey. When crossing a wide plain, far from home, he saw a lion at a distance. The lion saw him at the same time, and began slowly to follow him.

一次，非洲南部的一名旅客開(kāi)始了他的漫長(zhǎng)之旅。離家很遠(yuǎn)了，當(dāng)穿越一個(gè)大平原時(shí)，他看到遠(yuǎn)處有一只獅子。與此同時(shí)，獅子也看到了他，并且開(kāi)始慢慢地跟著他走。

When the traveller walked fast, the lion walked fast! When he stopped, the lion stopped! The man saw that the lion meant to follow him until dark, and then spring upon him.

當(dāng)這名旅客快速行走時(shí)，獅子也走得很快！當(dāng)他停下時(shí)，獅子也停止不走！他感覺(jué)獅子是有意要跟蹤他直到天黑，然后猛地?fù)渖纤?/p>

He was not able to run away from the lion, for the lion could run faster than he. So he thought of a plan to cheat him.

他不可能逃離獅子，因?yàn)楠{子跑得比他快。所以他想到一個(gè)辦法來(lái)騙過(guò)獅子。

He came to a high cliff, below which was a deep hollow. Crouching down, he hid behind a rock, where the lion could not see him. Then taking a branch which he found among the rocks, he put on it his coat and his hat, so as to make them look like a man.

他來(lái)到一處高高的懸崖，其下是一處深谷。他蹲下身，藏在一個(gè)巖石的后面，使獅子無(wú)法看見(jiàn)他。然后他從巖石中找到一個(gè)樹(shù)枝，他把他的衣服和帽子掛在了這根樹(shù)枝上，是它看上去像一個(gè)人似的。

He then held the branch above the rock behind which he was hid.

然后他將樹(shù)枝舉起來(lái)高過(guò)他所藏身的巖石。

Soon the lion came creeping slyly along. The moment he saw the coat and the hat, he made a sudden spring at them. He bounded right over the place where the man lay, and, falling down among the rocks, was killed!

很快這只獅子狡猾地爬了過(guò)來(lái)。見(jiàn)到衣服和帽子的一刻，這獅子猛地?fù)淞松先?；但越過(guò)了旅客所在的地方，結(jié)果墜在巖石間，死了！

The traveller was saved, and ere long he reached his own home.

旅客的命保住了，不久他就回到了自己的家。
