tongue和cheek這兩個詞恐怕大家都認識，tongue是“舌頭”，cheek是“臉頰”，with one’s tongue in one’s cheek —舌頭在臉頰里，這聽上去似乎是不能理解的。這是一個用以形容某種說話方式的狀語短語。每個人的舌頭都是長在自己的嘴巴里的，說話時，靈活的舌頭應該在中嘴里發(fā)揮它的作用；如果說起話來，舌頭跑到臉頰里卻了，這多別扭，多不自然。因此，with one’s tongue in one’s cheek指的是說話不真誠，說的話不作數，或者以諷刺的口吻說話。其中的兩個one’s都可省去，變成with tongue in cheek:

We think he is difficult to be trusted because too many times we have found him speak with his tongue in his cheek.
