今天又是美國大學系列節(jié)目，我們今天要聊一聊：美國的大學最看重本科生什么，美國大學在哪些方面會著力培養(yǎng)本校的本科生。

1.美國大學的目標：建立多元化的學生群體

Most universities aim fora hard working and diversestudent body.

很多美國大學都提倡要建立hard working（努力）并且diverse（多樣的）student body（學生群體）。

Adiverse student bodyis a community of students who are interested in a lot of different subjects and careers.A diverse student body是一個學生群體，里面的學生對不同的科目和職業(yè)都會感興趣，簡單地說，就是強調(diào)多樣性的生源。

David在UCLA（加州大學洛杉磯分校）大一剛開學的第一周，就見到了各種人才，有爵士樂音樂人（jazz musician），還有一些醫(yī)學預科生（pre-med students），程序員（coders），新聞專欄作家（news column writer），他們都是一些在校的大學本科生。

大學里的學生都have a lot ofunique talents（有很多獨特的才能）。

比如，David就有一位朋友會下blind chess（盲棋），能夠memorize the board and play without looking。

2.美國大學為什么致力于“培養(yǎng)多元化學生群體”？

A diverse student body意味著學生能go into different careers（從事不同的職業(yè)），這也就意味著，the student body will have accomplishments in all of thosecareer paths（在所有的職業(yè)領域取得成就）。

這個是基于長遠考慮的，學生畢業(yè)以后走向不同的行業(yè)，都很有成就的話，很明顯，in a lot of different career fields，就會增加本校的global impact（全球影響力）。

Ivy League（常春藤聯(lián)盟）schools have many students like that.

Colleges want to develop these kinds of students so that they canimprove their brand（提升自己的品牌價值）.

A school like Harvard is a great example.哈佛大學就是一個很好的例子。

因為Harvard有像Mark Zuckerberg（扎克伯克）這樣的alumni（校友），就非常能增加the name value of the school（學校的知名度），并且可以lead to more applications（吸引更多申請）。

Alumni非常重要，一方面是因為他們可以reflect the value of a school’s education（反映學校的教育價值），另一方面是因為，對于母校在讀的學生，they can also offer resources or donations（提供一些資源或者是捐贈）。

3.美國大學如何培養(yǎng)多元化學生群體？

1).可以switch your major（換專業(yè)），并且程序簡單。

At college, most of the time it is very easy to switch yourmajor.在美國大學換專業(yè)很簡單！

這樣的話，學生可以改變他們的plans for their career（職業(yè)規(guī)劃），so that they have a higher chance of finding a career path that theyare passionate about（更方便學生找到自己的專長和激情所在）。

David身邊就有換專業(yè)的朋友。

Just a few weeks ago his friend changed his major from psychology to computation biology.從心理學換到了計算生物學。

換專業(yè)的程序也非常簡單，只需要fill out a short form（填一個簡短的表格），然后send it to a school email address（郵件發(fā)給學校）。

對于部分的專業(yè)，可能會more difficult to switch majors,但大部分的專業(yè)，換專業(yè)的程序都很簡單。

2).每個學生必須參加general education（通識課程）。

Most colleges havegeneral educationrequirements.大多數(shù)大學都有通識課程的要求，學生要學習一些其他科目的基礎課程，比如musicology（音樂學）和political science（政治學）。

These classes can help people decide if they want to switch majors.

如果不確定是否想換專業(yè)的話，這些課能幫助學生做出決定。

There’s usually hundreds of general education classes of different categories.每個人上的通識課也不一樣，學校里開設幾百種不同種類的通識課。

學生被要求，to take a certain number of each category before they graduate（畢業(yè)前必須要從不同的門類里面選一定數(shù)量的課）。我們中國的大學也是這樣要求的。

開設這種通識課的目的，就是幫助學生to get a morewell roundededucation（獲得更全面的教育），to be able to explore their interests（發(fā)現(xiàn)自己興趣所在）。

David身邊就有同學，通過通識課，而發(fā)現(xiàn)了自己興趣所在。

這位學生took a sociology general education class（修了社會學的通識課），之后她決定to add sociology as aminorto her economics major（學經(jīng)濟學的同時，輔修社會學）。

You can also do adouble major.你也可以修雙專業(yè)，只不過it is often a lot harder。

3).大學非常重視extracurriculars（社團活動）

Extracurriculars是學生了解new careers，并且meetother people with similar interests（碰到志趣相投的人）的很有趣的方式。

學校想要學生通過這樣的方式，to make organizations and make connections with others（創(chuàng)立一些組織或者和其他人建立聯(lián)系），所以，校方會set aside money（提供資金支持），還會安排counselors（指導老師）。

Extracurriculars就是社團、組織，比起通識課，它更能幫助學生找到興趣所在，because they are notmandatory（不強制的）。

Extracurriculars是not mandatory，你愿意花時間去參加，那就說明是真的喜歡。

After you meetpeople with similar interests, that can lead tocollaborationsand contribute to a more diverse college community.志趣相投的人在一起，就可以一起合作搞點什么。

比如，開頭我們提到的David的jazz musician friend，就通過extracurriculars認識到一群人，并且組建了band，they go out to perform on weekends（周末出去表演）。

這種教育方式很棒，值得我們借鑒，通過通識課，以及課外活動，讓學生可以從學術以及興趣上找到自己興趣所在，從而建立美國大學最看重的“學生生源多樣性”（a diverse student body）

如果學生能夠take advantage of these resources（利用這些資源）,他們就可以在大學期間，find the right career path for them to contribute to in the future（找到利于未來發(fā)展的職業(yè)道路）。
